Can a chatbot tell you why your life matters?

Speaking at the St. John Paul II National Shrine in Washington, Divine Mercy University President Charles Sikorsky, L.C., warned that artificial intelligence is deepening a mental health crisis affecting adults and children alike.

Drawing on Pope Leo XIV's first encyclical, Magnifica Humanitas, Fr. Sikorsky traced the crisis to three roots: identity, connection, and meaning. AI can intensify each one. People look to it for a sense of who they are. They turn to it for company instead of to each other. They expect it to answer questions it can't, like why a person is here at all.

The deeper answers, he said, are found in faith: an identity as children of God, a community to belong to, and a purpose no technology can supply.

With Mental Health Sunday approaching on October 11, it's a timely read for parishes, families, and anyone in the helping professions.

By age 10, St. Thérèse of Lisieux had lost all three women she loved as mothers.

Her wet nurse, Rose, cared for her as an infant. Her mother, Zélie, died when Thérèse was four. Her sister Pauline, who stepped in as a second mother, left home to enter the Carmelite convent. Soon after, Thérèse fell into a mysterious illness—hallucinations, tremors, and fear so severe she couldn't be left alone. Her doctor couldn't name it.

On Pentecost Sunday in 1883, her sisters knelt by her bed and prayed before a statue of Our Lady. Thérèse saw the Blessed Virgin smile at her, and the illness lifted.

Most healing won't look like hers. But the Little Flower's story is a reminder of why DMU forms mental health professionals who make room for the Divine Physician to work alongside the care they give.

Today, October 1, the Church celebrates her feast. St. Thérèse is one of the eight patrons of Divine Mercy University.

Twenty-five years ago , our world changed in a single morning. September 11, 2001, is a day none of us will forget — one marked by profound loss, but also by extraordinary courage, sacrifice, and love for neighbor.

Today, we remember the lives lost, the first responders who ran toward danger, and the families who still carry that grief. We hold them in prayer.

At Divine Mercy University, we've spent 25 years training men and women to walk alongside people in their darkest moments — because we believe every person, in suffering or in strength, is held by God's mercy. That conviction is why we do this work.
