As we did last year, this year we will hatch our chicks again! It is a wonderful hands-on life science lesson. Today is day 1 of our 21 day cycle.

This week we have our sprouts growing in our seed starter containers! We will transfer our starters into the garden next week.

Our Painted Lady Butterflies have come out of their cocoons. We will release them outside later this week!

5 of our baby chicks have hatched! The kids named this one Sweet Pea!

The children are learning all about the plan life cycles and planted their seeds into their very own cups!
This year are planting peas, beans, watermelon, okra, sweet peppers, basil, tomatoes, Lima beans and more!

Chicks Update: We are on day 19 of the eggs in the incubator. We are getting closer to the chicks hatching! Thursday should be the big day, but some may take a little longer to hatch. We see one egg has a small crack which is normal for Bantam eggs. This is all so exciting!
Our caterpillars are all now in their habits and have formed their cocoons. The kids are very excited and are anxiously waiting for the butterflies to emerge!

Chicks Update: We are now on Day 7 of Chicken Eggs in the incubator! We will remove the black turner on day 19 to let the eggs be still and they should hatch day 21. So exciting!
Caterpillar Day 7: The caterpillars are getting really big and are now around an inch long. They are starting to make their way up to the top of their containers. We are now going to be extra careful not to move or interrupt them as they start the phase of forming their chrysalis.

Each classroom will be observing their caterpillars turn into butterflies!
Benefits of butterflies include: Butterflies are important pollinators. Approximately one-third of all plants need pollination to set fruit, and bees and butterflies are major pollinators.

Tomorrow we will be putting our eggs into the incubator! Each class will get a chance to monitor the eggs each day and add fresh water to keep up the humidity in the incubator.
