The Compensation Trap Why “just practice more” keeps players stuck.

Most amateur players do not have a practice problem. They have an ego problem. Jeremy Jones put his finger on exactly why when he told me something I have not been able to stop thinking about: the brain wants to make balls.

It is not a motivational statement. It is a description of a mechanism, and it is the reason so many players can run three or four balls, occasionally clear a rack, and still never get any more consistent no matter how much they practice. That intermittent success is just enough to convince you that your game is basically sound. It is not.
