acceptable pattern in several breeds. The merle gene on it's own isn't of concern, but when two merle patterned dogs are bred together, puppies have a 25% chance of inheriting that merle gene twice. These dogs are referred to as "double merles" and they usually have a predominantly white coat. The lack of pigmentation in certain areas causes the hearing and sight to not develop properly. Double merles can have varying degrees of hearing and sight loss, ranging from none at all to complete deafness and no eyes. So why do people do it? Sometimes well intentioned breeders attempt to better their lines by breeding two exceptional dogs together and just disregard coat color. Sometimes it happens by accident. Most often it seems, it is done out of ignorance. That is why it has become our goal to educate the world on double merles. When I am out in public with Kalisi and Adora, most people we meet have never heard of double merles and have no idea there would be a risk in breeding two merles.
