A Dairy Worker Training will be available Tuesday, September 15th from 12:00 pm- 4:30 pm at the TAMU AgriLife Extension Center in Stephenville. This training will be available in both English and Spanish and lunch will be provided by Zoetis to those in attendance.

Daily animal checks really matter! USDA has received 454 suspect case submissions since June 3 from Texas with only 44 confirmed NWS cases in the state to date.

Watch for signs that something’s not right:

☑️Maggots or egg clusters in wounds or body openings

☑️Foul or decaying smell

☑️Changes in behavior - irritation, isolation, or lack of appetite

A tick bite, ear‑tag site, wire scratch, or the navel of a newborn animal can all become entry points for NWS. Look closely at every part of the animal, especially healing spots or areas prone to cuts.

Staying alert is one of the strongest defenses against New World screwworm.

Does this fly look like a New World screwworm (NWS) fly?
Well…it is but it’s a sterile one, released as part of ongoing eradication efforts.

Sterile NWS flies are coated with fluorescent dye that glows under a blacklight, helping scientists quickly tell them apart from wild flies. Because the dye can be hard to see, we don’t encourage people to look for flies.

Instead, please watch your animals closely and report any signs of NWS infestation, such as draining wounds, maggots, egg masses, or discomfort. Early reporting protects animals and helps us stop the spread.
