No one gets left behind...and that becomes even more important in later years when learning complex topics rely on having a strong grasp of earlier concepts.

Many people are confused how we could run a school with no tests...but there’s good reason for it.

Self-paced learning ensures that children are reaching mastery of topics, so we don’t need class-wide tests to prove that.

Besides, tests don’t measure the one trait that is the most important for a happy and successful life - confidence.

Confidence and mindset determine what a child thinks they can accomplish - and that becomes what they *actually* accomplish.

Your confidence determines your ceiling.

That’s what we want to measure, and we do that through Exhibitions of Learning and our daily group discussions.

Even for us adults, speaking up and disagreeing in a group setting is such a challenge.

Yet, this is a key trait of good leadership skills - and critical thinking.

Children need to be able to stand up and disagree with both respect and courage.

That’s why we practice this every week.

At our weekly Town Hall meetings led by the learners, children are encouraged to bring up issues and raise concerns about what’s not working and present new ideas.

This is a lesson in courage and our students get it every week.

Conflict with others is a natural part of life because we are all different and communication is often imperfect.

Learning to navigate that conflict is what sets some children up for a life of success while others will be stuck in repeating patterns of friction.

Here, we teach healthy communication tools (like ‘I feel’ statements) and encourage conflict resolution discussions to work through disagreements instead of letting emotions and negativity boil over.

We believe that for a child to have a happy life, both at work and at home, these skills are essential and are often completely ignored in other school settings.

Executive functioning skills like focus and resilience are a top goal at our school - for a reason. These are strongly linked to success, and even more so than grades.

Here’s how we build focus:
1. We involve students in making the rules, so they feel ownership over their own learning.
2. We involve students in setting their own daily and weekly goals, and give them encouragement and a bit of a push when needed. This builds a sense of responsibility.
3. Daily, we ask questions like, what worked today, how was your focus, what would improve it?
4. We give students freedom to work in ways that are comfortable for them - on the floor, in a beanbag, at a proper desk.
5. We make learning hands-on and fun, so students are naturally engaged!

It’s hard to believe, given all the news about the drop in focus and resilience. But we are experiencing the opposite here at Acton! Want to see for yourself?

One of the most underrated skills that no one talks about is children learning to speak up when they disagree and advocate for themselves when something is not working for them.

That skill takes practice because of the nuance required to do this while staying respectful yet firm.

Every single morning at Acton, we start the day with a “launch” discussion for 15 minutes.

We discuss big topics and complex hypothetical scenarios.

Children are encouraged to speak up and share their opinions and push back against each other in a respectful debate-style way that does not put anyone else down.

We intentionally choose launch discussions that don’t have clearly “right” answers, but there is a right way to communicate - the rules of engagement.

These discussions build those communication skills while also building critical thinking skills.

That’s why we start and end the day with these Socratic discussions.

Children develop creativity and real world skills better through unstructured play. Our goal is two hours of unstructured play outdoors every day for our youngest learners.
Here’s an example of what that looks like. Come visit us at the Augusta County fair and learn about a different way of doing school. We will be here every day through Saturday!
