Succession Gardening: Don’t Let Your Garden Take a Break 🌱🍂
Here in Iredell County, NC, summer may be winding down—but your vegetable garden doesn’t have to!
As we move toward September, it’s the perfect time to start thinking about succession gardening: replacing tired summer crops with cool-season vegetables so you can keep harvesting well into fall.
Instead of pulling out a tomato, pepper, zucchini, or bean plant and leaving that space empty, think about what can come next.

We're excited to share a project that is especially meaningful to us as the Extension Master Gardener Volunteer Association of Iredell County alongside Yokefellow Ministries to help create the Yokefellow Community Garden—creating a sustainable, volunteer-managed garden that will provide fresh produce for neighbors in need while serving as a living classroom for gardening education.

Join us for a special fundraising event benefiting the new Yokefellow Community Garden on Saturday, October 10, 2026, at the Iredell Cooperative Extension Center (444 Bristol Drive, Statesville, NC). Doors open at 8:30 a.m. for check-in, demo garden tours, a light breakfast spread, local vendor plants and a silent auction. Our speaker will go live at 10:00 a.m. The event is sponsored by the Extension Master Gardener Association of Iredell County.

This inspiring morning will feature guest speaker Mark Weathington, Director of the JC Raulston Arboretum at North Carolina State University. He will present Nearly Native: Wild and Cultivated Plants from Our Own Backyard. Mark travels extensively in search of plants that enrich and diversify the American landscape and is the author of Gardening in the South: The Complete Homeowner’s Guide.

Proceeds from this event support the Yokefellow Community Garden, a volunteer-led initiative where NC Extension Master Gardener℠ Volunteers and community members will grow fresh produce for the Yokefellow Help Center, mobile food pantries, and other local food assistance programs. The garden will also serve as an outdoor classroom, offering hands-on gardening education and meaningful volunteer opportunities.

🎟️ Ready to join us? Tickets can be purchased online through Givebutter: https://givebutter.com/growing-hope-campaign or click the QR code below beginning Wednesday, August 10th.

Whether you're interested in gardening, native plants, or simply supporting a worthwhile community project, I hope you’ll consider joining us. And please feel free to share this with others who might enjoy it.

For anyone wishing to become a sponsor or simply donate to the project, details will be available soon on the campaign site!

Come grow with us. Every ticket helps us grow hope!

Bees cannot get enough of the spikes of violet-blue flowers of woodland sage, so plant lots of them for the bees. You’ll enjoy them, too!
