Our Project Search Teacher, Jessica Elmore, was able to share more about the expansion and success of this unique program and its community partnerships that make it successful for our interns.

This year the program was expanded to Portal Middle-High School and Southeast Bulloch High School.

Bulloch County Schools has embarked on a two-year journey to seek national Eat Real Certified Certification for its School Nutrition Services.

This is part of the school district's continued effort to provide healthier school meals by sourcing more local foods, preparing more meals from scratch, and prioritizing more fresh and sustainable food ingredients to improve meal quality. Read more via link in comments.

During our professional development day for faculty and staff on September 8, we provided a variety of skills training. ​O​ne was for our middle and high school athletic directors and coaches.

Held at Georgia Southern University's Convocation Center, the attendees heard from Dr. Torian White and key leaders from Georgia Southern Athletics. Georgia Southern Athletic Director Chris Davis and a panel of Eagles head coaches shared their insights about building a team culture: Rodney Hennon (Baseball), Sharon Brown (Softball), Chad Willis (Volleyball), Heather Macy (Women's Basketball), and Charlie Henry (Men's Basketball).

Our Superintendent of Schools, Dr. Torian White, shared his expectations for coaches and their role in the school community. He reminded them that their athletic programs can be key motivators for student academic persistence to graduation and a place for students to find community. He also emphasized his four key priorities for athletics: academics, behavior, compliance with guidelines, and community.

​"I express appreciation to all ​of our middle and high school ​coaches ​for the​ time they ​s​pend with student-athletes​," Superintendent White said. "I would ​also like to give​ a special shoutout to ​o​ur middle and high school athletic directors and principals for their leadership. They provide operational and logistical leadership guidance ​f​or our athletic programs​."

​D​r. White also praised community sponsors and parents for their support ​and investment in our athletic programs which create ​extracurricular and scholarship opportunities for students.

Cancer impacts our students, employees, and retirees. It has been another year filled with both supporting the journeys of those we care deeply about and gathering to celebrate lives lived well.

One of the ways that some of our schools fight this disease is by participating in the Relay for Life of Bulloch County's Schools vs. Cancer program. Schools form teams to participate in the local event, raise funds, and earn a portion of the funds back for their schools.

Lori Wiggins of Relay for Life recently recognized three of our schools for their fundraising efforts and presented them with funds for their schools. Well done Stilson Elementary School, Southeast Bulloch Middle School, and Brooklet Elementary School.

Bulloch County Relay for Life is currently soliciting schools in to participate in the 2027 Relay for Life which is April 16, 2027.

Thank you to the Kiwanis Club of Statesboro for their continued support of extracurricular opportunities for students. They recently donated $1,500 to Mill Creek Elementary School’s music program. Tasheina Canty-White, the school's music teacher, attended a meeting to be recognized and receive the donation from Kiwanis' President-Elect Crystal Simpkins, who is the director of early learning and literacy for Bulloch County Schools.

​"We are exposing students to new opportunities in ​our music program," said Canty-White. ​"​I am using Kiwanis funds to purchase individual recorders for every ​third to fifth grader to use and keep. I am also using ​it to fund t-shirts and experiences for our chorus. ​We will sing at the Savannah/Hilton Head Airport as part of their School Music for the Holidays program​, and for the first time, I will take ​f​ive students to ​the Elementary State Honor Chorus in Athens, G​e​orgia this coming January.​"

​Canty-White believes that student participation in active arts programs gives students an opportunity to build shared values while cultivating creativity, and building core memories together.

​"These experiences forge relationships that evolve into community, a place to belong​," said Canty-White. ​"When we build our students we build our larger community.​"

​Tasheina Canty-White was selected as Bulloch County Schools' Teacher of the Year during the 2018-2019 school year. She has been an educator for 18 years, with 12 of those years in this school district.

Georgia Southern University's Teacher Appreciation Game on September 5 in Paulson Stadium was a great day for Bulloch County Schools. Our Superintendent of Schools, Dr. Torian White, took the field as the honorary team captain for the Eagles' football game against Charleston Southern. We were so proud to see Dr. White represent our school district on the big stage.

Throughout the game Georgia Southern recognized and paid tribute to educators in Bulloch County and across Georgia who invest in students every day. We had five teachers win Extra Yard for Teachers grants, and the University honored our partnership with them for Project Search by hosting its faculty and student interns.

Thank you to Georgia Southern University for recognizing the vital role educators play in our community!

Five of Bulloch County Schools’ teachers won $500 Extra Yard for Teachers Grants from Georgia Southern Athletics and the College Football Playoff Foundation. They and other recipients were honored on the field at halftime during the Georgia Southern vs. Charleston Southern football game on Saturday, September 5.

This is the sixth consecutive year that Georgia Southern and the College Fooball Playoff Foundation have partnered to recognize and celebrate area educators. The grants are also made possible through a partnership grant from the Sun Belt Conference.

Bulloch County’s Superintendent of Schools, Dr. Torian White, was selected as an honory team captain for the game, and he joined the educators on the sidelines as they were honored. Congratulations to these teachers who applied for and were selected from more than 150 applicants from Bulloch, Chatham, Effinham and Liberty counties to receive a $500 grant:
• Kelsey Dyal of Sallie Zetterower Elementary
• Natasha Flowers of Statesboro High School
• Brandi Bittner of Julia P. Bryant Elementary
• Tayler Bohanon of Southeast Bulloch Middle School
• Megan Bennett of Southeast Bulloch High School

The grants will support a variety of classroom projects designed to enhance learning experiences and provide students with additional educational opportunities.
