From restaurant kitchens to swimming pools to rabies response calls, Donya Glenn Jr. ('24, '26) is on it. 🀝

As an Environmental Health Specialist II with the Georgia Department of Public Health, Glenn helps protect communities by conducting inspections, reviewing plans and enforcing environmental health regulations. Before a new food service establishment or mobile food unit opens its doors, he evaluates equipment specifications, plumbing, ventilation, water and wastewater systems, and overall facility design to make sure everything meets state requirements. πŸ”

In the field, Glenn inspects septic system installations to prevent groundwater contamination and sewage exposure. When a potential rabies case comes in, he responds on-site, properly handling and preparing specimens for the laboratory so officials can determine whether post-exposure treatment is necessary. πŸ§ͺ

Glenn earned his bachelor's of science in public health in 2024 and his master's of public health in 2026 from Jiann-Ping Hsu College of Public Health at Georgia Southern University.

Principal Jacob Horne ('08, '12) admits he wasn't always the best student. His time at Georgia Southern changed that. πŸ¦…

Professors such as Michelle Reidel, Ph.D., in the College of Education showed Jacob that teaching isn’t just about educating young peopleβ€”it’s about inspiring a lifelong love of learning.

"She wasn't there just to collect a paycheck," he said. "She knew she was growing the next generation of educators."

After earning his bachelor's in secondary education with a focus in history, Jacob applied to several schools in the area but struggled to land a job. Then came a phone call from Benedictine Military School, inviting him to apply. He started almost immediately and threw himself into coaching and mentoring student groups.

He returned to Georgia Southern for a master's in educational leadership, a move that propelled him from history department chair to assistant principal to his current role as principal. Now, he helps guide educators to build connections with students beyond the classroom, the kind that open the door to real conversations. 🀝

"I've had young men come into my office and share every detail of life and struggles that teenagers have," Horne said. "I want them to know that I'm giving them the same support I would give my own children. Because to me, that's special." πŸ’™
