As parents, we often focus on giving our children safety, love, and the chance to succeed. But sometimes we overlook the deeper reason education matters—it’s not just about school. It’s about preparing our children to live with purpose in a complex and often unfair world.
Education is the process by which a child learns to see the world critically—not just as it is, but as it could be. A well-educated child learns to ask questions and to build rather than destroy. These are not test scores—they are values that ripple through generations.
It’s easy to assume change comes through politics, wealth, or influence. But lasting change often starts in a quiet place: a child reading a book, thinking deeply, or asking a difficult question. That is where the world begins to shift.
And while schools play a role, it’s the home that often teaches a child why learning matters. When parents nurture curiosity, when they share stories of struggle and resilience, they plant something powerful—something no one can take away.
Education is not just a way out of hardship. It is a way into humanity. Into understanding others.
If we want a more just, peaceful world, the most radical thing we can do is raise children who are thoughtful, informed, and brave enough to care.

Learning Alongside Our Kids: Why Teachers Are Lifelong Learners Too
Recently, I had a conversation with a parent of one of my students. She asked why I always study and continue taking classes even if I already have a diploma. I've been thinking a lot lately about that. Seriously, why? The incredible journey our children embark on in their pursuit of knowledge is incredible. And you know what I've realized? My students are incredible. They continue learning, digging deeper, asking questions, asking for help and support to become better, smarter, more knowledgeable. When I look at them, I am proud to be part of their learning journey. You don't even know how important for the teacher to see that their students want to grow! But our kids are not the only ones learning in the classroom. Teachers are right there alongside them, navigating the world of education together. Here's why I believe I continue learning.
1. Modeling Lifelong Learning: When teachers learn with their students, they are setting a powerful example. Our children witness that learning is not something confined to childhood or school years; it's a lifelong endeavor. This teaches them the value of curiosity and continuous growth.
2. Relatability: Learning together fosters a unique bond between teachers and students. When teachers share their learning journey, it makes them more relatable and approachable figures in our children's lives. Students see that teachers are not infallible experts but fellow explorers in the world of knowledge.
3. Adapting to Changing Times: The world is evolving rapidly, and teachers need to stay up-to-date with the latest information and teaching methods. Learning alongside their students allows teachers to adapt their teaching strategies effectively, ensuring that they provide a relevant and engaging education.
4. Fostering a Growth Mindset: Teachers who are open about their learning process help instill a growth mindset in their students. It sends the message that it's okay to make mistakes and that setbacks are simply opportunities to learn and improve.
5. Demonstrating Humility: Learning with students showcases humility on the part of teachers. It acknowledges that no one has all the answers and that even educators have room to grow and develop their skills.
6. Encouraging Exploration: When teachers embark on learning journeys with their students, it encourages exploration and inquiry. Students feel more comfortable asking questions, seeking answers, and exploring topics beyond the curriculum.
The concept of teachers learning with their students is a beautiful testament to the dynamic nature of education. It reminds us that learning is a collaborative and continuous process that knows no age boundaries. So, the next time your child's teacher shares their own learning experiences, take a moment to appreciate the valuable lesson they are imparting – that the joy of learning is something we can all share, no matter where we are on our educational journey.

Recently, I was talking to the parent of one of my students. Mom contacted me at the end of March to check if her daughter was ready for the State test (in New York City, math state tests are at the end of April). The girl is in the 4th grade in a good school. She is an amazing girl, very polite and such a nice person! It is a pleasure to work with her.
However, when we started, we found a lot of problems. She didn't understand math concepts and was confused when she read word problems (she was confused about what operation to apply: multiplication or division).
Do you think it's a unique story? Unfortunately, not. It's common when kids haven't understood something, move on to the next topic, and get stuck. It's like an avalanche: something is missing, leading to a misunderstanding of more advanced topics.
All classes are online now, and mom called me after the class to talk. She said she didn't know how many problems her daughter had. And as a concerned mom, she was next to her daughter, listening to what we were doing in classes to review the material later to help her catch up.
We still have time before that nice girl goes to the 5th grade. We still have time to prevent any fears and math anxiety, and frustration. And I am happy she did that because she caught that special moment when parents and teachers still can help the student without killing the budget.
That student has already started working on her problems. She was upset, but she was ready to work with other kids who also had some issues with math. And guess what? I am sure these students will be successful because kids at this early age can understand that even if they have a problem, don't give up, go back to work, find the way, and find the solution.
Even if it's a summer, dear parents, find some time to study and make this time productive so that kids can go back to school prepared.

When I first met my husband, we talked about everything, and I said that I was a teacher. He thought being a teacher was the easiest job: many benefits, two months off in summer, work till 3:00 p.m. He doesn't feel like that anymore:-) Behind, there is a lot of preparation, checking homework, and time and efforts to help the students. Kids are different, which is evident when they are in a group. To help every student in the class, the teacher has to differentiate classwork so that each student does what they need to grow. And that means working till deep night and sacrificing personal time to find special materials, prepare extra homework, or whatever the student needs. Does it worth it? 100%
