Register to join in-person or virtually: www.statenislandmuseum.org/event/lockdownsi/
The goal of this project is to document Staten Islanders’ lives during the lockdown that took place from March to June 2020—one of the most intense and memorable periods of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.
Submissions from all Staten Islanders are welcome, including stories, photos, video blogs, and various posts and captions from social media platforms.
“Lockdown Staten Island” is part of the curatorial collaborative, Journal of the Plague Year. This digital archive began at Arizona State University and since expanded to include collections from Australia, New Orleans, the Philippines, Boston, Canada, Las Americas, and Sacramento. Fellow CUNYs such as Bronx Community College, Brooklyn College, and City College have also joined the effort.

Gabriella continues her focus on her project. From the Collection of the Staten Island Museum, this 1918 campaign flyer supports Mary Grey Brewer for New York State Senate. She had been a leader in the Staten Island Woman Suffrage Party when women claimed the vote in New York State in 1917, and she became the first woman on Staten Island to run for office on a major party ticket the following year. (That same year Elinor Byrnes of Staten Island ran for US Congress as a Socialist). A woman would not be elected to office from Staten Island until 1973 when Elizabeth Connelly won her campaign for the New York State Assembly. Debi Rose became the first Black elected official from Staten Island when she won her race for City Council in 2009.
