On June 19, 1865, two and a half years after the Emancipation Proclamation was signed, all people living in the United States, including the formerly enslaved, were OFFICIALLY granted freedom.
Juneteenth (also called Jubilee Day, Freedom Day, and Emancipation Day) is a combination of “June” and “nineteenth.” It wasn’t until 2021 that Juneteenth was recognized as a federal holiday.
The color RED is prominent with Juneteenth. Celebrations include red foods, drinks, and desserts which represents the cultures that would’ve come through the Texas coast (Galveston) the later years of the slave trade.
