🌎 Celebrating Penn State faculty and staff making an impact around the world!

Eleven Penn State faculty and staff have received 2026–27 Fulbright awards, providing opportunities to teach, conduct research and engage with communities across the globe. From Australia and Brazil to Ghana, Japan and beyond, these recipients are taking Penn State expertise and curiosity beyond the Commonwealth.

Teaching is about more than delivering content. It involves the often-unseen work of building trust, recognizing students as whole individuals, creating spaces where mistakes become opportunities for growth, and making countless decisions that shape the learning experience.

Join the panel “The Human Work of Teaching: Understanding the Dimensions of Faculty Labor” to explore the emotional, intellectual, and relational work behind meaningful teaching. Panelists will discuss building authentic learning communities, developing multidirectional relationships with students, and navigating challenges such as time constraints, institutional policies, and changing dynamics of trust in the age of AI.

This conversation asks an important question: How can higher education better recognize, protect, and sustain the human work of teaching?

This week, we’re celebrating Dr. Patrick Plaisance, Don W. Davis Professor in Ethics at the Donald P. Bellisario College of Communications, for his contributions to the revision of the Society of Professional Journalists’ Code of Ethics. Plaisance served on a 16-member committee of journalists, educators, scholars and industry leaders tasked with updating one of journalism’s most widely recognized ethical guides for today’s rapidly changing media landscape.

The updated code addresses emerging challenges such as artificial intelligence, misinformation and the rise of independent and creator-driven journalism, while continuing to emphasize the importance of truth, accountability, minimizing harm, independence and transparency. Plaisance also advocated for language highlighting qualities such as courage, curiosity and humility, helping ensure the code remains focused on the values that guide ethical journalism—regardless of how technology and media continue to evolve.

As Plaisance shared, “Ethics is not about having the right answer … It’s about getting good at asking the right questions.” His work demonstrates the important role faculty scholarship can play in shaping professional standards and strengthening the future of their fields.

Learning doesn’t always happen inside the classroom. 🧠

At Penn State Beaver, Dr. Amy Camodeca brings learning to life through the Neuropsychology Lab, where psychology students gain hands-on experience conducting assessments, participating in research, and working directly with members of their community. Through this unique learning experience, students are able to apply concepts from their coursework in a real-world setting while developing valuable skills and making a meaningful impact.

From the classroom to the community, Dr. Camodeca is showing students what it means to learn beyond the lectern!

Congratulations to the 46 Penn State faculty members and faculty teams selected as the first recipients of the AI Center of Excellence in Teaching and Learning’s Instructional Innovation Grants! 🎉 These grants will support innovative projects exploring thoughtful ways to integrate generative AI into teaching and learning during the 2026–27 academic year.

From small-scale classroom experiments to large-scale course and program transformations, these faculty-led projects represent a wide range of disciplines, campuses and approaches to supporting student learning. The work will explore areas including AI literacy, feedback, assessment, simulations, student engagement and more as faculty examine how AI can be used thoughtfully and responsibly in educational settings.

Congratulations to all of the grant recipients! We look forward to seeing the impact of these innovative projects and the lessons they will bring to teaching and learning across Penn State. đź‘Ź
