Welcome to the Sports Communication Interest Group of the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication.

The Sports Communication Interest Group was established in 2010. SPORTS is designed to support AEJMC members who are scholars and teachers of sports-related courses, including those in the areas of journalism, broadcasting, advertising/marketing and sports information/public relations with a balanced agenda that focuses on teaching, scholarship and issues of professional freedom and responsibility.

The Alex Jones of Sports Just Blew Up ESPN 08/24/2017

This is a long and thorough examination of who Clay Travis is, how he elevated himself partly, or greatly, thanks to the critiques of ESPN (my opinion: some of which, frankly, are relevant; much are hyperbole.)

Travis seems to be a good example of the growing power of those who find a political point of view, find every angle to promote it, in this case with some questionable if not completely unfair context.

Anyway, enough of what I think, you should read it.

Maybe it's a conversation starter for the group.

The Alex Jones of Sports Just Blew Up ESPN If you thought the right’s moral panic over ESPN’s Robert Lee controversy was a new phenomenon, you haven’t been watching Clay Travis’ Periscopes—or buying his merchandise.

From Richard Deitsch in SI:

Depressing and disappointing to see Vice Media cut the majority of its Vice Sports editorial staff to focus on video content. The site consistently published quality work. The announcement follows the current trend of media companies catering to advertisers (and not consumers, per se) with a larger pivot to video. The list of those digital entities featuring sports writing that have suffered layoffs in 2017 includes (but is not limited to) ESPN, Fox Sports, Sports Illustrated and Yahoo! Sports.

CAN WE HAVE AS MUCH IMPACT - WITH UTMOST VALUE AND INTEGRITY - ON VIDEO-ONLY AS WE HAVE IN PRINT OR FROM TRADITIONAL PRINT JOURNALISTS?

- from John Shrader. What do you think?

ARE WE IN DANGER OF THE PHENOMENON INVADING THE WORLD OF SPORTS JOURNALISM?

Is sports media immune or do we already get a bit of it (maybe not fake but certainly slanted), with sports teams and leagues producing their own content? With athletes and their reps providing their own narrative? With access to newsmakers getting more difficult than ever? With accountability issues?

Are sports fans more knowledgable or more circumspect than your average political observer/voter?

Just a few thoughts......
