Starkville Swing Dance

It’s official – we are back! Sunday nights at 6pm, starting Aug 23th!

****OVERVIEW****

Join Starkville Swing Dance on Sunday nights for beginner-friendly swing dance lessons and events! We focus on the lindy hop, a fun, energetic partner dance that originated to jazz music in the 30s and 40s and is danced around the world today.
Events are free, and are open to anyone – bring your friends! No partner, experience, or coordination required.

We usually post a few days in advance, and will update the event description each week with contact info for getting into the building, or to let you know if we had to cancel, so make sure to check that out before showing up. Other event info is the same each week, so if you are new, check out the event description of our most recent past event for full details!

Get your dancing shoes ready! We are still aiming to start up next Sunday August 23rd (details coming very soon!), but if you want even more dancing, join our friends at some of the other dance events in the Starkville area. Details below!

***********OTHER DANCE EVENTS AROUND STARKVILLE*************

Jolly Squares - square dancing and line dancing. Tuesday nights 6:45-815pm, 303 West Reed Road. Progressive classes, new class starting this Tuesday (Aug 18th), though new people can usually join for a week or two after, or else you have to wait several months for a new set of classes to start. $5 a class, open to anyone. For questions, contact the Jolly Squares Facebook group or contact Connie at 662 418 7012.

MSU ballroom dance club - free beginner and intermediate ballroom dance lessons, usually Thursday nights and Sunday afternoons at Sanderson Center. Check out their Group Me for more info (MSU Beginner Ballroom Dance Club).

Bulldog Boots N Boogie - MSU club that does line dancing and country swing classes Sunday nights. Free, meets on MSU campus. Updates posted mainly on their instagram. (Times partly overlap with our events this semester, so if you must attend their events, you can come to our classes and still make it to the second half of their events where they teach the country swing part :) )

Rick's Cafe does line dancing Wednesday night at 8pm (or Fridays in the summer), some people dance country swing in between the line dances. Check out Western Roots Dancing on Facebook.

The Dance Studio of Tupelo hosts ballroom dance parties with a drop in beginner lesson on Fridays at 7pm in Tupelo, and ballroom dance classes on Monday nights at the ACPA in Starkville. Monday classes are paid: 6:15-7pm they do a class on one dance style, 7-7:45pm on another style. $40 per series, $12 per class (each of the two dance classes charged separately). Classes and parties do a mix of styles (ballroom, east cost swing, latin). Check the Dance Studio of Tupelo page for info (updates on Starkville classes are posted every so often so you may have to scroll a bit!)

Hi everyone! We are going to be taking a break for the rest of the spring/summer this year, but we plan to pick up again mid-August when the university semester starts again.
For the fall semester, we will likely move back to Sunday nights because of football, but stay tuned for details closer to August.

Hey! We will not have swing dance this Saturday March 28 as both our teachers are busy, but we'll be back the next Saturday as usual. Hope tos see you then!

Hello! We will have no swing dance on March 14 2026 due to spring break and both of our teachers being busy, but please join us the Saturday after (March 21) and we will be back on as usual!

What is swing dancing?
Swing dancing is a partner dance that originated to jazz music of the 30s and 40s, and is danced around the world today. It’s also super fun and a great way to meet people.
Our classes focus on lindy hop, a specific form of swing dancing that is closely related to east coast swing, jitterbug, and jive (but different from other dances such as country swing/western swing and west coast swing).
