Society is increasingly interested in, not only the safety and security of the retail food supply, but also in how this is affected by the way animals are raised. There is also concern about how the use of antibiotics in agriculture may affect human risk for acquiring antibiotic resistant enteric bacteria through the food supply. We believe that, less antibiotics would be used if cattle were manag

"I’ll never forget that cool morning in late summer when I awoke in the back of my friend’s pickup truck at the base of Mount Borah, Idaho’s tallest mountain.

I had been out of veterinary school for just over a year, and just barely turned 30. The previous day I had given my two weeks’ notice at the clinic I had been working at for the past 5 months. Prior to starting there, I had completed a large animal internship, but the position I was about to leave had been my first real job out of veterinary school, and the future was uncertain."

"Prior to the recent case reports of human encephalitis linked to pseudorabies virus (PRV), zoonotic spillover events of PRV were considered rare, and generally only caused mild clinical signs, or in cases of severe disease, were not definitively linked to PRV.1,2 The sudden appearance of multiple cases of viral encephalitis linked to PRV so soon after a major outbreak of a novel PRV variant in Chinese swine herds, indicates a potential evolutionary watershed moment for this virus, and for humanities relationship with it."

"China is by far the world’s largest pork producer, with a national herd one-time inventory in excess of 400 million hogs. To put the scale of the Chinese pork industry in perspective, the next two largest pork producers are the European Union with ~140 million hogs, and the United States with ~75 million.1 Furthermore, China harvests ~700 million pig per year, compared to ~240 million for the European Union, and ~135 million for the United States."1

"Pseudorabies virus (PRV) is a double stranded α-herpes virus that is widely distributed throughout the world. While pseudorabies, or ‘mad itch’, was originally described in cattle in 1813, the etiologic agent was identified as a virus by Aladar Aujesky in 1902."

"The successful mitigation of any disaster requires action by many, including volunteer and full-time first responders; local, state, and federal government officials; academia; the medical community; and non-governmental organizations (NGOs). Unfortunately, many people in non-animal/non-agricultural occupations or specialties may be unfamiliar with or unprepared to assist in disaster management activities involving animals."
