We stopped by MakerSpace this week to take a look at how our 5th graders were working together to solve problems. Students were given limited supplies, a time limit, and the challenge to build the tallest tower. They worked in groups and used their materials to create building components and design the structures.

Excellence giving back! We enjoyed sharing with our community at the annual VIVA Art Charity Celebration! The annual VIVA art block sale is a student-led project start to finish as 5th graders in our gifted art program estimate costs, create the art, research sale prices, sell artwork and determine the recipients of their proceeds.
This year, the project raised a whopping $2000, and students chose to give back to Kaylen Robinson family to help with medical expenses related to complications from ROHHAD syndrome this past year. They also gave to the JL King Center, and to Riley’s Purpose (a special needs prom organized by Ebony Yates in honor of her daughter, Riley Yates). Finally, they reinvested funds back into our VIVA program so we can continue creating our wood blocks and providing new experiences and projects for VIVA students. In addition, they donated to our chicken coop program to help cover the cost of food and supplies so it can continue operating next year.
One of our favorite events of the year, the Celebration included remarks from Mayor Lynn Spruill who commended students for their commitment to giving back to the community where they live.
We're proud of you, Overstreet VIVA Jackets! Thank you to Bell Building Supply, Pete Mulrooney, Overstreet PTO and all our parents and teachers for your support of this wonderful yearly project.
