Good evening Cougar Families. This is Shannon Sellers, principal of Speight Middle School.
School calling with some important announcements for the upcoming week.
Tomorrow is the big day! We are very excited to have our Cougars in the building. School starts at 8:30 AM sharp. Remember students can be dropped off at 8:00.

Car riders should be dropped off at the front of the school. We are only having one lane for carline this year, please do not try to pull through the parking lot to drop your student off in the mornings or pick them up in the afternoons. This is for the safety of our students.

When students arrive at school, they should go to the cafeteria for breakfast if they would like or go straight to their homeroom class.

All bus riders should be at their scheduled stops 15-20 minutes early this week. Transportation is working diligently to limit the amount of bus issues, but unfortunately, there could be bus issues. Bus issues are typically resolved by the end of the first week. Please be patient with us and Wilson County Schools Transportation.

Fall Sports Tryouts begin this week. If your student wishes to participate in athletics, they must have a physical and all forms completed in Final Forms. Tryouts begin Monday. The times are as follows: Football 3:30-5:30; Volleyball 3:30-5:30; Soccer 3:30-5:00. Cheerleading tryouts begin Wednesday at 3:30-5:30.

Tomorrow is day 1 of our 2026-2027 school year. As the school year starts, remember that everyday matters. Please encourage your students to be prepared for school and engaged in their classes.

We look forward to seeing our Cougars tomorrow. We are Cougars on the Rise at Speight Middle School. Have a great night.

Message for Families of 6-12 Graders:

North Carolina law requires all public schools to show a video to students in grades 6-12 within the first five days of the school year regarding inappropriate behavior and adult sexual misconduct in school settings. Families have the right to complete an opt out form if you do not want your student to watch the video. More information below. ⬇️

As a result of the Protect Our Students Act (Session Law 2023-128/HB142) and General Statute 115C-105.57(2a), a video was developed with the purpose of providing North Carolina students in grades 6-12 with important information about inappropriate behavior and adult sexual misconduct in school settings. The video was developed by the North Carolina Center for Safer Schools in partnership with Capitol Broadcasting Company. Link to the law - https://drive.google.com/file/d/1QLIrrX478StjO4oAM8SfuBRy6S4p1cUz/view.

The video is produced in the style of a video-blog that covers the topic of inappropriate behavior by an adult. After watching the video, students will be able to:
• Understand what inappropriate behavior by an adult is and what it might look like if it is happening to them or someone they know.
• Know how to practice healthy behaviors and skills to stay safe.
• Identify a responsible adult who they could ask for help.

The title of this video is Protect Our Students - Middle School; however, this is the video that will be shared with both middle and high school students. The video can be viewed by families at this link - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rFRmrQePB8A.

Because the topic of this film contains sensitive material, we are offering parents the opportunity to opt out your student from participating. If you do not wish for your student to participate in this video, please complete and submit this form - https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSdGrxLRGUlpv1oKIZNnMVsUkO4xxM0iOVN8p5IqI1RCFqxssw/viewform.

The deadline to complete this opt out form is August 26, 2026. If you have any questions or need a paper copy of the opt out form, please contact your student’s principal.
