In 1995, Dolly Parton started mailing books to children in her home county to inspire children to love reading in honor of her dad, who couldn’t read or write.

That idea lives here too. Every month, 1,375 children in Montcalm County find a book in the mailbox — because of neighbors who fund it, volunteers who run it, and a woman from Sevier County, TN, who started it all.

Strong Beginnings 3-Year-Old Preschool is Expanding!
MiLEAP has announced the expansion of the Strong Beginnings program, bringing free, high-quality early learning opportunities to even more 3-year-olds across the state, including new classrooms in Montcalm County.
In partnership with Montcalm Area Intermediate School District and Montcalm Eightcap, Inc., Strong Beginnings provides play-based learning, certified early childhood educators and family supports that help children build the language, literacy, social-emotional and early learning skills they need for kindergarten and beyond.
The program is expanding during the 2026-27 school year, increasing access and giving hundreds more Michigan children the opportunity for a strong start. Learn more about Strong Beginnings
