The Abbasi Program in Islamic Studies is the central forum for the study of Islam and Muslim societies at Stanford University. We support research on Islam and Muslim societies across the globe, coordinate coursework across disciplines, and aim to deepen public understanding of Islam through events, digital media initiatives, and K-12 outreach.

Join us for a talk by Carla Power, two-time Pulitzer Prize finalist author, examining a leading Islamic scholar and activist, Amina Wadud. Drawing on archival materials, she will discuss Wadud’s journey as a Methodist preacher’s daughter who spearheaded civil rights movements on four continents.

Critical to understanding Wadud is her experience and ever-changing relationship to both Islam and the United States. Now recognised as a leading theologian, changing hearts, minds, and laws in Muslim-majority countries, Wadud’s story and work have resulted in countless Muslim women and q***r people seeing their faith anew.

This course explores the work of contemporary artists who have revitalized the medium, using collage to address complex themes of identity, politics, and the fragmented experience of modern life. It will examine the fundamental generative principles of collage - juxtaposition, displacement, materiality, difference, and event, and how these principles intersect with issues of location (where it happens), object (what it is), process (how it is realized), and purpose (why it is).

The studio component will focus on hands-on experimentation, where students will develop a personal visual language through the manipulation of paper, found materials, and traditional and non-traditional techniques.

How did the world first become “global”?

Between 1400 and 1800, silver mined in the Andes financed silk bought in China, enslaved Africans built plantation empires across the Atlantic, and pilgrims, pirates, and merchants stitched together a world that had never before been so connected.

Taught by Farah Bazzi, this Stanford History course follows the movement of money, people, goods, and belief across the great empires of the early modern world—from the Ming and Qing to the Ottomans, Mughals, Safavids, and rising powers of Europe.

Along the way, students will wrestle with some of history’s biggest questions: How can we think of “globalization” before modernity? Where did capitalism come from? And when—and why—did some economies begin to pull away from others?
