Today is National Fragile X Awareness Day in the U.S. and many other countries. Why do we raise awareness of Fragile X each year? We raise it for the 100,000 Americans who have Fragile X syndrome. That is a lot of people, but it isn't just them. It is their 200,000 parents, 400,000 grandparents, siblings, stepparents, aunts, uncles, teachers, doctors, clinicians, caregivers, loved ones - pretty quickly the number of those impacted each and every day by Fragile X syndrome balloons into the millions. And then there are the 1.5 million premutation carriers in the U.S., most of whom are not aware they are carriers and the impact on their health and future generations.
