Meet Cohort 5 Scholar, Natalie! 👋🏽Originally from New Jersey, Natalie spent middle school and high school in Silver Spring, MD. Her family has both African-American and Caribbean roots by way of Guyana and Trinidad. Natalie's research interests have generally been in various areas of cancer biology, pathology, and cell biology, but she is also interested in exploring immunology and regenerative medicine to work at the interface of medicine and research as a physician-scientist.

Meet Cohort 5 Scholar, Akla! 👋🏽 Akla hails from Ethiopia and moved to the US four years ago for college. She graduated from with a B.A. in Neuroscience and Accounting and a minor in Chemistry. Akla's passion is to become a scientist developing therapeutics for neurodegenerative diseases.

Meet Cohort 5 Scholar, Arline! 👋🏽 Born and raised in Crown Heights, Brooklyn, her parents are from Haiti, so she is a first generation Haitian-American. Arline's research interests center on the mechanistic underpinnings of resilience and plasticity in the brain and peripheral organ systems, and she is drawn to work that integrates socioeconomic perspectives. Arline's career goal is to become a physician-scientist who translates those insights into regenerative therapies and personalized interventions for vulnerable youth populations with developmental and neuropsychiatric disorders.

Meet Cohort 5 Scholar, Daniel! 👋🏽 Daniel was born and raised in Texas, but his parents are originally from South Korea. Growing up, he visited family there, giving him an appreciation for both cultures. Recently, Daniel graduated from , where he studied Neuroscience with a minor in Philosophy. Daniel's research interests broadly center on translational neuroscience and understanding how the nervous system can be studied, protected, and restored through approaches spanning clinical research, neurotechnology, imaging, and data science. Long term, he hopes to become a physician who combines patient care with research to help translate scientific discoveries into better treatments.

Meet Cohort 5 Scholar, Seyan! 👋🏽 Seyan was raised in Southern Louisiana before moving to Cleveland, Ohio in late middle school. She earned her bachelor’s degree in Public Health from The Ohio State University before completing her MPH at Columbia University, where she focused on public health research methods. Her past research has largely centered on housing insecurity and Black maternal health, with a focus on understanding and addressing racial disparities in health. This year, she is excited to expand her research experience by studying reproductive biology and conducting clinical research within Stanford OB/GYN. Ultimately, Seyan hopes to become an OB/GYN who integrates clinical care, translational research, and community programming to reduce racial disparities in maternal outcomes.

Meet Cohort 5 Scholar, Avril! Born in Southern California, where much of her family still lives, Avril has spent most of her life in California’s Central Valley and 4 years in the Bay Area for undergrad. Avril's research interests include neurobiology, behavior, and development, and she hopes to ultimately serve underserved communities as a pediatrician or through family medicine.

The Stanford Cancer Biology PhD program is inviting talented applicants to participate in a one-day, graduate application workshop. Join us for a day of *virtual* workshops led by current graduate students. Receive advice on submitting a competitive application to graduate programs and learn how to develop your own career as a scientist. Applicants will be paired with a graduate student in the Cancer Biology program to go through application workshops and intensive editing sessions. Additionally, applicants may have the opportunity to partake in casual practice interviews with Cancer Biology faculty members.

Please note that participation in this preview program is not a requirement for prospective Stanford Cancer Biology applicants, nor is it a guarantee of being accepted into the PhD program.

We welcome applicants from diverse backgrounds who are passionate about studying cancer biology. Applicants should be U.S. citizens or permanent residents planning to apply for graduate study for the upcoming cycle. Undocumented and DACA-mented students are welcome to apply.

12PM - 1:30PM Break - Lunch/Coffee break (On Zoom with other students/applicants)
1:30PM - 2:30PM - Workshop 2 - Preparing for faculty interviews - online and in-person
2:30PM - 3PM - Break (get off zoom)
3PM - 4:30PM - Q&A with current students in the program (Get them to submit their questions beforehand, but can also have people ask questions there)
4:30PM - 5PM: Closing ceremony

Meet Cohort 5 Scholar, Marco! 👋🏽 Born and raised in Baldwin Park, CA, in the greater Los Angeles area, both of his parents are from Mexico, with family split between Sonora and Jalisco. Marco is broadly interested in metabolism and in bridging science and clinical settings through dietary intervention, as he works toward becoming a physician-scientist.

Meet Cohort 5 Scholar, Aditi! 👋🏽Aditi was born and raised in the Bay Area, before moving to Los Angeles for college. Her family is originally from South India, and Aditi feels lucky to have grown up in a large Bay Area Indian family/friend community. Her research interests lie in better understanding Alzheimer’s disease pathology and neurodegeneration and she hopes to continue with science outreach alongside research.
