About ASSU and SSE
The Associated Students of Stanford University (ASSU) is an education nonprofit financially independent from Stanford University, that serves as the representative for over 15,000 Stanford students. As the student government, the ASSU funds over 500 student organizations each year, and works on initiatives that address students’ needs and concerns. Stanford Student Enterprises (SSE) is the financial branch of the ASSU, designated to assist with ASSU asset management and accounting services, and provide students with hands-on business experience. Jointly, ASSU and SSE aim to promote lively student activity, advocacy, and leadership. The ASSU Financial Manager and SSE CEO interfaces with a large number of engaged stakeholders and coordinates with Stanford University administrators and staff, with students’ best interests as their first priority.
What You’ll Do
ASSU Financial Management:
Oversee ASSU’s ~$5 million operating budget and investments totalling ~$22 million
Supervise the disbursement of ASSU student fees and fee waivers
Regularly evaluate and communicate ASSU policies on grants and finances
Conduct regular quantitative and qualitative analysis on student organization funding and expenditure
Ensure that all expenditures of ASSU funds are duly authorized, documented, and within the purpose, functions, and budget of the specific agency or organization
Advise various stakeholders on policy initiatives and recommend improvements
Assess best practices of peer institutions regarding funding and financial management
Assist the Accounting Manager in coordinating annual financial audit and tax filings
SSE Executive Management:
Oversee all SSE divisions: Cardinal Labs, Student Store, Cardinal Ventures, Capital Group, and Stanford Consulting
Manage SSE’s ~$1 million operating budget
Serve as final approval for significant contracts or organizational changes
Promote outreach, accessibility, and branding to the Stanford community and beyond
Engage SSE Board of Directors to develop and advance organizational goals
Manage payroll approval, compensation controls, and incentives for the organization
Team and Performance Management:
Directly supervise five (5) full-time employees and the SSE Central student staff, including but not limited to: Director of Marketing; Director of New Ventures & Strategic Partnerships; Webmaster; and SSE Investment Analyst
Jointly oversee the Managing Directors and sub-managers for each enterprise, alongside the SSE Business Operations Manager
Foster a culture to promote excellent and sustainable work in a dynamic and inclusive environment
Manage and recruit ASSU staff to provide administrative, operational and financial services for ASSU and student organizations
Convene meetings of various teams and committees to delegate and direct initiatives
Operational Support:
Steward ASSU’s relationship with the University, especially regarding ASSU long-term planning, operations, and technical and information systems
Ensure ASSU compliance with relevant University, local, state and federal government policies and legal requirements
Facilitate effective information flow among various ASSU branches and SSE divisions
Perform ad hoc responsibilities as needed and/or as per ASSU governing documents
Who You Are
Minimum Bachelor’s degree and 1-3 years of relevant experience
Experience in student leadership and organizational development
Prior relationship to student life at Stanford University
Strong initiative and capacity for independent work
Financial acumen
Ability to establish, manage, and prioritize multiple projects while balancing competing demands
Excellent interpersonal, written, and oral communication skills
Strong experience leading and collaborating in teams, and bringing out the best in others

Direct experience with ASSU and SSE
Ability to represent and advocate views to various audiences
Aware, responsive and adaptive to students’ needs and concerns
Ability to accomplish goals through formal and informal channels with ‘social agility’
