When your child is struggling, the last thing they need is someone who can only explain it one way.

When I hire a Significant Educator, I look for three things.

First, a certified teacher. Someone who understands the material from every angle, because we believe in one size fits one.

Second, cognitive empathy. Experienced educators who understand children, how they learn and how they behave, and who can explain things in different ways until it clicks. That’s how confidence gets built.

Third, and to me the most important, high EQ. When kids are struggling, they need someone compassionate, caring, and understanding.

Some kids are fried after a full school day. Sitting through an hour of tutoring at 5pm isn’t help, it’s another hour of trying to hold on.

Other kids are just getting warmed up at the 30-minute mark and need the time to really dig in.

After 30 years in education, I’ve learned that the right amount of support looks different for every child. That’s why we now offer 15, 30, and 45-minute sessions at Significant Educators. Ever read the label on something and realize most of it is filler?

A lot of tutoring works the same way. Generic worksheets. Cookie-cutter plans. Someone doing the homework so it looks finished. Sessions that fill the hour but don’t build anything.

Take all of that out, and what’s left? Usually not much.

We started with a different question: what does your child actually need? Then we left out everything else.

One of the hardest parts of parenting a student is knowing how much to step in.

Some kids need someone checking their grades every week. Others are doing their best, feel overwhelmed, and just need to know someone is in their corner.

There’s no single right answer. It depends on your child. One size fits one.

Do you need JUST a math tutor?

Most places will match you with someone who’s free on Tuesdays and call it a day. We do things a little differently.

We get to know your family first. Before anyone opens a textbook, we want to understand your kid: how they learn, where they get stuck, and what’s been going on at home and at school.

We hand-pick their educator. Not whoever’s available. The person who actually fits your child.

We look past the grade. A math struggle is often really a confidence thing, an organization thing, or a gap from a few years back. We work on all of it, not just tonight’s homework.

We’re aiming for independence. The goal isn’t a kid who needs us forever. It’s a kid who feels confident and succeeds on their own.

Kids don't learn from people they don't feel connected to. That's it. That's the secret.

We see it over and over. A student who's "bad at math" suddenly starts raising their hand. A teen who dreaded essays starts asking for feedback.

What changed?

Usually not the material. It's that someone finally got them.

When a student feels understood, they relax. When they relax, they're willing to take a shot, even if they might miss. And every time they take that shot, they get a little more sure of themselves. Eventually they don't need us hovering. They've got it.

That's honestly the whole goal. Not to be needed forever, but to help kids believe in themselves.

It's why Eric still talks with every family before we match a tutor. Because every kid is different, and they deserve someone who fits them.

What does your student need most right now?

We spend so much time thinking about the class, the assignment, the test, or the grade. But sometimes the bigger question is, what does this student actually need to be successful?

More confidence? More structure? More patience? Someone who explains things differently? Someone who can help them become more independent?

One thing I’ve learned after all these years in education is that the right support changes everything.

And the right support is different for every student. That’s a big part of what we do at Significant Educators. We get to know the student first, then work to find the educator and support that make sense for them.

When I say we carefully match students with educators,
I do not just mean by subject.

Yes, the educator needs to know the material.

But that is only the beginning.

I am also thinking about personality, confidence, communication style, academic needs, goals, and how the student responds to different kinds of support.

Some students need someone very calm and patient.

Some need more structure and accountability.

Some need an educator who can challenge them without making them shut down.

Some need to rebuild confidence before the academics really start to move.

And sometimes, what a parent thinks the student needs at first is only part of the picture.

That is why the matching process matters so much to us.

The goal is not simply to find someone who can teach the subject.

It is to find someone your child can actually learn from.

That is Precise Human Matching.

A student can have an incredibly knowledgeable teacher and still not connect with the way that person teaches.

That matters.

When families reach out to Significant Educators, we are not just asking, “What subject does your child need help with?”

We are trying to understand the student.

How do they learn best?
What frustrates them?
What helps them feel comfortable enough to ask questions?
Do they need someone calm and patient? More energetic? More structured? Someone who can build confidence first?

Then we think carefully about which educator is most likely to connect with that student.

Significant Educators was founded by Eric Sigman after more than 25 years in education across the NY tristate area, including STEM leadership and school administration.

That experience, combined with personally running Significant Educators, gives Eric a unique perspective when families reach out. It’s not just about finding someone who knows the subject. It’s about understanding the student and finding the right educator for that particular student.
