Over the course of a demanding daylong final round featuring interviews, masterclasses, rehearsals, and performances, they generously shared their time and expertise to help us select our wonderful inaugural Artist-in-Residence, Ashley Yoon.

Their commitment was a testament to the strength of the INTEMPO community and to the power of mentorship, collaboration, and artistic excellence. We are deeply grateful for their leadership and partnership as we begin this exciting new chapter. ❤️

: “Volunteering is in my blood. My mom, Poonam Arora, tells me stories of how she cooked regularly at a soup kitchen when she was pregnant with me. Service has always been a part of my life, our family life, and I try to incorporate it into everything that I do.

“Last year, through my school’s Community Engagement Fellowship, I taught jazz and pop at the INTEMPO Summer Music Session. I taught all the string instruments, which was definitely challenging because I didn’t play any string instruments. It was overwhelming at first as I had never really worked with kids before. I wanted to teach jazz because Stamford Public Schools have been closing their music programs, especially jazz programs. Even I didn’t have access to jazz until I came to Rye Country Day School, and I wanted to share my love for it with other students. In our classes, we played songs like ‘Birds of a Feather,’ which the kids loved, and we also learned about jazz music and the blues scale.

“I was recently awarded the Stamford Citizen of the Year scholarship, in honor of war veterans from the city of Stamford. As someone who only moved to Stamford about three years ago, I'm happy I could connect with and contribute to the community.

“My role model is definitely my mom. She changed careers while raising me and my brother, going from investment banking to earning her PhD and eventually becoming the undergraduate school dean at Babson College. She also continued doing research throughout all of those transitions. Watching her balance family, research, and work while continuing to grow and challenge herself has been really inspiring to me.

“I also do research in public health focused on access to care for women with breast cancer, especially women from marginalized communities. My goal is to help improve access to treatment and survival rates. Going forward, I hope to continue combining science, service, and music in whatever I do.”

: “El voluntariado está en mi sangre. Mi mamá, Poonam Arora, me cuenta historias de cómo cocinaba regularmente en un comedor comunitario cuando estaba embarazada de mí. El servicio siempre ha sido parte de mi vida, de la vida de nuestra familia, y trato de incorporarlo en todo lo que hago.

“El año pasado, a través de la beca de Participación Comunitaria de mi escuela, enseñé jazz y pop en la Sesión de Música de Verano de INTEMPO. INTEMPO and Orchestra LUMOS are thrilled to announce our inaugural Artist-in-Residence: Ashley Yoon! 🎻✨

At just 22 years old, Ashley has already built an extraordinary career as a performer and educator. A graduate of The Juilliard School and current master’s student at the Yale School of Music studying with Soovin Kim, she has appeared at the Norfolk Chamber Music Festival, the Taos School of Music, and the Bowdoin International Music Festival as a fellow; given a solo performance at Carnegie Hall; and appeared as concerto soloist with the DeKalb Symphony Orchestra. She is also a winner of the American Protégé International Competition of Romantic Music and currently teaches through Yale’s Music in Schools Initiative. Her teachers have included Joseph Lin, Juliette Kang, Hye-Jin Kim, and Younguk Kim. Her dear mentors are the members of the Brentano Quartet.

Over the course of an intense, daylong final round, Ashley impressed the jury not only with her technical brilliance and emotional depth as a performer, but also with her curiosity, thoughtfulness, and remarkable gift for teaching — qualities that lie at the heart of this residency.

Con tan solo 22 años, Ashley ya ha construido una trayectoria extraordinaria como intérprete y educadora. Last month, our CEO Lou Chen brought INTEMPO cello students Eduardo and Santi to a Kallos Chamber Music Series concert featuring his friend and former Princeton University classmate Leland Ko. Leland is rapidly emerging as one of his generation’s leading cellists, with recent accolades including First Prize in the Naumburg International Cello Competition and an Avery Fisher Career Grant. Currently, he is a finalist competing in the Queen Elisabeth Competition in Brussels.

Not only did Eduardo and Santi get to hear Leland perform a stirring program of works by Bartók, Shaw, Granados, and Brahms; they also got to briefly play his newly acquired Guarneri cello worth millions of dollars!

“When we were in college together, I actually turned pages for Leland’s piano trio,” said Lou. “We all knew he was going to be a big deal. I’m grateful that our INTEMPO students can witness the beginning of his brilliant career!”

El mes pasado, nuestro Director Ejecutivo, Lou Chen, llevó a los estudiantes de violonchelo de INTEMPO, Eduardo y Santi, a un concierto de la Serie de Música de Cámara Kallos, en el que participó su amigo y excompañero de Princeton, Leland Ko. INTEMPO, Orchestra Lumos Launch Stamford Concert Series For Emerging Violinists The concerts will showcase artists competing for a two-year residency and the exclusive use of a historic violin valued at nearly $100,000.

: “Being a student at INTEMPO has opened my eyes to the music of my own culture. I used to exclusively listen to songs in English, but being exposed to the diversity of Latin music helped expand my music taste and even the kind of music I create today. Studying audio production has also shaped my teenage years by motivating me to use different tools and techniques to take the melodies in my head and actually bring them to life. It’s sort of like a reality check, reminding me that creativity is a gift, and I live by that every single day.”
