✨When the tendon is put under quick stretch (e.g., being hit with a reflex hammer), the muscle spindles in the muscle belly fire and direct the nervous system (via a 2-neuron reflex arc) to tell the muscle and its synergists to contract.

This protects the tendon from being overstretched and possible torn.

The stretch reflex can also lead to tight/hypertonic/overly-facilitated/locked musculature.

✨INVEST IN YOURSELF

Static Stretching... protocol shown in the video

During this time that we are not working, money might be tight, but perhaps we have more free time. Why not invest in yourself and expand your knowledge base so that when you return to work with your clients, you are even better at your manual and/or movement therapy.

✨Here I have a great short cadaver dissection video of the structures of the Posterior Pelvis, including the:
✅Piriformis,
✅Sciatic Nerve
✅Sacrotuberous
✅Sacrospinous Ligaments,
and another muscle of the deep Lateral Rotator group, the Superior Gemellus. 👍

Typical anatomy is that the sciatic nerve enters the posterior pelvis between the piriformis and the superior gemellus.

BTW, the superior gemellus attaches from the ischial spine to the greater trochanter of the femur.

✨Whiplash Accident.

During a whiplash in which the force comes from behind or in front, the head and neck are thrown in excessive flexion and excessive extension.

For this reason, whiplash accidents are sometimes referred as hyperflexion/hyperextension injuries.

Hyperflexion risks tearing posterior tissues, let alone kicking in a muscle spindle stretch reflex in the posterior extensor muscles; compression fractures can also occur at the anterior margins of the vertebral bodies.

Hyperextension risks tearing anterior tissues, as well as kicking in a emuscle spindle stretch reflex in the anterior flexor muscles; compression fractures can also occur at the posterior aspects of the vertebrae.

✨Piriformis

The Piriformis is a member of the Deep Lateral Rotator Group (also known as the Deep 6), composed of the following six muscles (from superior to inferior):

Piriformis
Superior gemellus
Obturator internus
Inferior gemellus
Obturator externus
Quadratus femoris
ATTACHMENTS:

The piriformis attaches from the sacrum to the greater trochanter of the femur.
The proximal/medial attachment is onto the anterior surface of the sacrum.

ACTIONS:
Laterally rotates the thigh at the hip joint.
Medially rotates the thigh at the hip joint (if the thigh is first flexed approximately 60 degrees or more).
Abducts the thigh at the hip joint.
Horizontally abducts the thigh at the hip joint.
Contralaterally rotates the pelvis at the hip joint.
NOTE: A tight piriformis can compress the sciatic nerve causing symptoms of sciatica. When this occurs, it is called piriformis syndrome.

✨Abductor Digiti Minimi Manus

The Abductor Digiti Minimi Manus is a member of the Hypothenar Eminence Group of intrinsic muscles of the hand, composed of the:

Abductor digiti minimi manus
Flexor digiti minimi manus
Opponens digiti minimi
(the Palmaris brevis could also be considered to be in the hypothenar eminence group)

ATTACHMENTS:
The abductor digiti minimi manus attaches from the pisiform to the proximal phalanx of the little finger.
The abductor digiti minimi manus also attaches into the distal tendon of the flexor carpi ulnaris muscle.

ACTIONS:
Abducts the little finger at the metacarpophalangeal joint.
Abducts the little finger at the carpometacarpal joint.

NOTE: Whenever the abductor digiti minimi manus contracts, the flexor carpi ulnaris also contracts, to stabilize the pisiform, which is the principal proximal attachment of the abductor digiti minimi manus. This is an example of proximal stabilization for distal movement.

✨When doing self-care stretching, a towel or pillow case can be used to extend your reach!

This is especially helpful for tighter clients who can not easily reach their body part to perform the stretch.

In this particular video lesson, we demonstrate use of the towel / pillow case for double knee to chest stretch, but using a towel to extend our reach can be done for any self-care exercise wherein it is difficult for us to reach and grasp the body part.

This method tends to be most useful for stretches of the lower extremities.

✨ HERE IS A BEAUTIFUL CADAVER DISSECTION VIDEO UNCOVERING THE POPLITEUS MUSCLE.

-In this prosected cadaver of the knee joint region, the superficial structures are reflected away one by one to uncover the popliteus!

-The popliteus is one of the four muscles in the deep posterior compartment of the (lower) leg.

-Its distal attachment is onto the proximal medial surface of the tibia. And its proximal attachment is onto the lateral condyle of the femur.
