Johns Hopkins has a reputation for being intense — but after visiting the Homewood campus, what stood out to me most was how student-centered, collaborative, and intellectually alive it felt.

Yes, Hopkins is a world-class research university. But it is also a place where students are encouraged to think across disciplines, explore big questions, and connect their academic interests to real-world impact.

A few things that stood out from my visit:

The new Bloomberg Student Center just opened this year and gives the campus a beautiful new hub for student life.

The upcoming Agora Institute will focus on democracy, civic life, and civil discourse — a timely and meaningful addition.

Hopkins is also making major investments in data science and AI, with the goal of helping position Baltimore as an East Coast hub for AI innovation.

I was especially impressed by how much emphasis JHU places on interdisciplinary learning. Even engineering students complete humanities coursework, and first-year seminars are intentionally small and faculty-led.

And one admissions point families should really pay attention to: Hopkins has made a major commitment to affordability, including no-loan financial aid packages and significant tuition support for many families.

The phrase that stayed with me from the visit was that Hopkins students are “multifaceted, interdisciplinary, and want to make an impact.”
