🧠 What Every Parent Should Know

πŸ€” What does a cognitive assessment actually measure?
It doesn't measure how smart your child is.

It measures how they learn.

Skills like attention, memory, processing speed, auditory processing, visual processing, reasoning, and more all work together to support learning.
Understanding those skills can help explain why school feels easy for some students and challenging for others.

πŸ“š Take a moment and think about last school year.

Did your child...
Struggle to finish homework?
Forget what they studied?
Take much longer than expected to complete assignments?
Lose confidence?
If you're nodding "yes," it's worth asking one question.
Do you know why?

A one-time cognitive assessment can help identify the underlying skills that may be affecting learning so you can move forward with confidence instead of guesswork.

πŸ’™ School has started. How is the routine really going?

Now that students are back in class, parents may be starting to notice where things are going smoothly and where their child is struggling.

Maybe homework is taking longer than expected. Maybe staying focused is difficult, directions are being forgotten, or your child is already coming home mentally exhausted.

At BrainFitU, our one-on-one cognitive training targets skills that support learning, including attention, memory, processing speed, auditory and visual processing, and reasoning.

And support doesn't have to make an already busy school schedule harder.
Local families can combine sessions at our Stafford center with live virtual training, while students outside the area can train virtually from anywhere.
School has started, but it is never too late to strengthen the skills your child uses every day.

❓ Why does every homework assignment take so long?

Does 20 minutes of homework regularly turn into two hours?

Slow processing speed doesn't mean a child isn't intelligent.
It means the brain may need more time to take in information, understand it, and respond.

Many students work incredibly hard every night but still struggle to finish assignments on time.

Understanding processing speed can help explain why learning feels exhausting.

One of the greatest strengths of homeschooling is individualized education.

Our cognitive training takes that one step further.

Every student begins with an assessment so we can identify exactly which cognitive skills need strengthening.

No guessing.

No one-size-fits-all approach.

Just a personalized plan built specifically for your child.

πŸ’‘ Tip Tuesday | National Literacy Month

You don't need a book to exercise an important skill involved in reading.

Try the Sound Swap Challenge! πŸ‘‚

Say:

"Say CAT."

Now ask:

"What word do you get if you change the /c/ sound to /h/?"

HAT!

Try another:

"Say MAP. Change /m/ to /t/."

TAP!

Once your child gets the idea, take turns creating words for each other.

Working with the individual sounds in spoken words exercises phonological awareness, an important skill involved in learning to read.

Keep it fun. If it becomes frustrating, make the words easier or stop and try again another time.

🧠 World Alzheimer's Day

Today is an opportunity to raise awareness about Alzheimer's disease and the millions of individuals and families affected by it.

It's also a reminder that conversations about the brain shouldn't stop when we finish school.

Attention, memory, processing speed, reasoning, and other cognitive skills are important throughout our lives.

At BrainFitU, we work with adults as well as children and teens, providing one-on-one cognitive training designed to exercise and strengthen cognitive skills.

It's important to be clear that cognitive brain training is not a treatment or cure for Alzheimer's disease, and concerns about memory loss or cognitive changes should always be discussed with a qualified healthcare professional.

Today, we recognize the individuals living with Alzheimer's, their families, caregivers, and the professionals who support them. πŸ’œ

πŸ“ You watched your child study.

They answered the questions correctly. They seemed prepared.

Then the test comes home, and the grade doesn't reflect what you know they learned.

Tests require more than knowing the material. A student needs to understand the question, hold information in mind, retrieve what they've learned, reason through the answer, and often do it within a limited amount of time.

When memory or another cognitive skill is weak, grades may not always reflect what a child actually knows.

BrainFitU looks beyond the grade to help identify the cognitive skills that may be making learning and testing harder.

πŸ“š National Literacy Month is about more than how many words a child can read.

❓ My child can read the words. Why don't they understand what they read?

Reading words and understanding what they mean are two different skills.

If your child finishes a page but can't tell you what happened, the challenge may involve comprehension, working memory, attention, or language processing.

Understanding the underlying cognitive skills can help identify why information isn't sticking.

So this National Literacy Month, here's something important to remember:

Reading success isn't just getting through the words. It's understanding and remembering what those words mean.
