Couple of shots of the Solar Eclipse on Oct. 14, 2023. These were taken with my cell phone but I was projecting the image with a SunSpotter Scope from the George Observatory.

Arecibo radio telescope, an icon of astronomy, is lost Arecibo Telescope's illustrious scientific career is over.
Just as an update -- The George is still closed not so much for renovations but per the pandemic. This is also a limitation imposed by the Texas State Parks. While the park is open for camping and day activities, it is our understanding that the park only allows a certain number of visitors in per day, and once that limit is reached, they allow no more in. As such, until the rules are relaxed - there is no observing being done at the Nature Center parking lot. Realize that the eyepiece can be considered a point of infection as multiple people end up touching it. As such, outreach as we did pre-Covid, is not possible and many are hesitant to do outreach until social distancing stipulations are relaxed and when the infection rate is near zero. A few have discussed using TV monitors to show what's in the eyepiece with webcams to their scopes and that may work in other settings, but that is not an option in the Nature Center parking lot. When the George Observatory gets closer to normal operations, we'll post it.

Back in 2015 I gave this talk to the Houston Astronomical Society and it was recorded and posted on YouTube. It is now five years since and I took some time to update this. I've given this talk a few times to the local clubs and at Astronomy Day for the past 9 or so years. If you are considering buying a telescope, please consider viewing it. I will apologize as it ended up being 40 mins, but I do have a breakdown of topics in the description.
Considerations in buying a telescope. If you are considering buying a telescope please watch. We amateur astronomers want you to make an informed and careful choice. Please do not buy scopes from...
