Braided Food Security

Embracing the braided-river model in which different ways of knowing can flow alone or join to maximize their strengths, the Uni of Alaska & Tribal Gov of St.

Paul are working to empower Indigenous communities with independent food safety monitoring. Food safety and security for Indigenous coastal communities in Alaska is increasingly threatened by environmental toxicants due to climate change and pollution, as well as by acute threats from devastating natural disasters. The University of Alaska and the Tribal Government of St. Paul Island are tackling this challenge and empowering coastal communities to take a leadership role in monitoring their natural resources by anchoring existing research technology and culturally appropriate training within a Tribal institution, as opposed to an external academic, agency or contract laboratory. By embracing the braided-river model in which different ways of knowing can flow independently or join to maximize each other’s strengths, our vision of transforming citizen-scientist research partnerships will facilitate rapid responses to changes in vital natural resources, with long-term goals of enhancing equity, inclusion, and resilience in rural communities. This project is part of the NSF CIVIC Innovation Challenge; funded by USDA NIFA.

Thanks to everyone who's already brought in samples. So far, we're at:
38 northern fur seals
4 fish
3 reindeer
2 seabird eggs
& 1 octopus

We're excited to launch our mercury monitoring project at the Bering Sea Research Center! As summer approaches and the harvest season begins, we're inviting community members to bring tissue samples from subsistence hunting and fishing to be measured for mercury concentrations. Participation is voluntary, and all data will be owned and used by the community. We'll share results quickly via Facebook, newsletters, and the Indigenous Sentinels Network app.

Contact the Aleut Community of St. Paul Island ECO office or find an Island Sentinel at the Tribal Office to help with collection!

Thanks to everyone who came out to join us for the Braided Insights on One Health course! We had an awesome two weeks of braiding different ways of knowing to focus on food safety and security, both in culture and tradition as well as in health and science.

The course may be over, but the Braided Food Security project is still ongoing! The Bering Sea Research Center is up and running, and still accepting tissues for mercury testing. We can test anything that you eat - contact Dallas Roberts with samples.

Thank you so much to everyone who's already donated samples for mercury testing! Dallas and the team have tested most of laaqudan (fur seal) samples from the first harvest along with some recently caught halibut. Keep the samples coming! We can test anything you eat: fur seal, fish, reindeer, birds, anything!

Join us at the Bering Sea Research Center tomorrow to see the testing in action and learn how the mercury analyzer works.

From 10:30 - noon you can get your hands dirty biosampling fish, from 1:00 - 2:00 Dallas will demonstrate the mercury analyzer and ISN data dashboard, and from 3:00 - 5:00 we'll discuss monitoring on St. Paul.
