Now don't get me wrong, "reading the spots off a page" (as my band director used to say), makes music really effortless to play! However, many of us get stuck when it comes to reading music, and lose motivation before we become good readers. What if you could learn to read by PLAYING?
Over the last 15 years I've seen so many students lose interest in their lessons, just as they were beginning to read music well. The truth is we all want basically the same thing-- to play songs we LOVE, songs that SOUND GOOD, songs that inspire EMOTION in us, and that make us feel confident as musicians.
What if I told you that by learning to play songs, you could learn to read music?
This is the idea behind my group lesson program.
Now you might think, "So does that mean I won't learn to read music?". Quite the opposite! You will absolutely learn to read music, but instead of toiling over each note, you will be able to more simply and easily ENJOY the process!
I grew up taking very traditional music lessons.
I played multiple instruments and LOVED playing. However, there were many times when I didn't enjoy practicing and things felt really hard. When I became a professional musician I began to notice how many different ways the musicians around me THOUGHT about music. I began trying new ways to learn songs and found that nearly all of them worked!
Each of us learns a little differently. Why should there be just one way we grow up playing?
Piano lessons can be as individual and unique as each of us are.
What if you or your child could take a lesson every week that explored all the ways that music can be played?
Now imagine that you or your child could take this kind of highly creative, really unique kind of lesson with a group of others and still feel it was as individualized as a private lesson! How would it feel to move smoothly through learning songs, and have others around you supporting your progress?
Group piano lessons are a really innovative and unique way to explore playing piano. Students as young as 6 years old begin writing their own music in the first couple of months. Adults find that they love playing the Blues, even though they came to learn classical music. Students who only wanted to read music begin to improvise.
My goal as your teacher is to inspire, educate, and empower you to achieve your creative goals. And watching students stumble upon goals they didn't even know they had, is super exciting for me.
