About Saint Louis University School of Medicine
Saint Louis University's School of Medicine, established in 1836, has a long tradition of excellence in medical school, graduate medical education, and graduate education. The school has the distinction of awarding the first medical degree west of the Mississippi River and is proud to be part of the 450-year tradition of Jesuit education. The SLU School of Medicine trains physicians and biomedical scientists, conducts medical research, and provides local, national, and international health services. Beyond the objective of training competent physicians who are scholars of human biology, we strive to graduate physicians who appreciate humanistic medicine grounded in Jesuit values. Our region faces challenges of poor health indicators, education, poverty, and racism, and the School of Medicine works for health equity and the well-being of our neighbors. We embody cura personalis (“care for the individual person”) and train doctors committed to dignity and respect for all patients, practicing medicine that changes lives for the better.
