1 in 3 teens in the US will experience physical, s*xual, or emotional abuse from someone they’re in a relationship with before they become adults, and nearly half (43%) of college women report experiencing violent or abusive dating behaviors.
.
Together we can #TalkAboutIt and have meaningful conversations about what healthy relationships look like to stop dating abuse / violence before it even begins.

Happy Valentine's Day from the BC Team :) 💕 Whether you're single, in a relationship, or somewhere in between, it's important for all of us to recognize the differences between love and infatuation!!
.
Infatuation is not necessarily a bad thing! The questions is, are you building a foundation of healthy love in the process? When the intense feelings of a new relationship fade away, that's when the foundation of a relationship becomes more clear. The goal should always be to build a relationship on things that don't alter with our ever changing emotions. Things like trust, respect, friendship, shared values, and common interests.
.
No matter what your relationship status is today, we hope you feel loved and value! And remember, your worth is not determined by your relationship status ❤️
Today is National Human Trafficking Awareness Day, so let's talk about where human trafficking and relationships/s*x collide: s*x trafficking.
.
S*x trafficking is a term that many people are familiar with, but you may not be familiar with what s*x trafficking actually looks like in real life. S*x trafficking doesn't just happen in other countries. It happens in the U.S., in our cities, in our communities. S*x trafficking can be scary to think about and difficult to understand, but it can NOT be ignored. The first step to change is awareness and education. Take some time today to educate yourself on the issue of human/s*x trafficking.
.
The information from this post came from a few sources. These are also a good place to start to further educate yourself:

⭐ The National Human Trafficking Hotline operated by @polarisproject

Every healthy relationship has some type of boundaries!! They can be physical, emotional, digital, etc. But just because you have a conversation about boundaries doesn’t necessarily mean it’s all smooth sailing from there. It’s actually beneficial to revisit the conversation every once in awhile to make sure you are both still feeling respected and comfortable. Even if you’re not currently in a relationship, it’s a good idea to think about what boundaries reflect your values, desires and goals for a future relationship ✨

Boundaries are an important part of any type of relationship, but learning how to communicate them and actually say no isn't always easy. It might even feel awkward sometimes. And that's OKAY. At the end of the day, protecting your body, mind, and future is worth it, even if it means disappointing someone with your "no." So next time you find yourself in a situation where someone is pushing your boundaries or making you uncomfortable, practice self-respect with one of these phrases!! And remember that you are deserving of healthy, safe, strong relationships 💚

There are mixed messages all around us about s*x and relationships... what we should be doing, who we should be dating, how far you should be going s*xually. Most of the time, these voices are influencing us without us even realizing it.
.
So today I’m here to remind you that despite pressure from the media, or even the people around you, only YOU can decide when you’re ready to have s*x. Just because you’re dating someone, doesn’t mean you have to have s*x. It’s important to discuss expectations and boundaries openly with your partner. And remember that it’s okay to date and wait 🤍

“Experts on romance say for a happy marriage there has to be more than a passionate love. For a lasting union, they insist, there must be a genuine liking for each other. Which, in my book, is a good definition for friendship.” — Marilyn Monroe
.
We love this quote!! Relationships are about so much more than passionate feelings and physical affection. Those things are great to have, but only last for a moment. Friendship, companionship, conversation, enjoying each other's presence, supporting each other -- these are things you want in a life partner. These should be the focus of our "relationship goals" ✨

With Valentine's Day right around the corner, we thought it would be a good idea to talk about ✅green flags✅ in a dating relationship. Oftentimes people focus on the red flags and warning signs of an unhealthy relationship (which are super important to be aware of). But knowing what a healthy relationship looks like and how to build one is just as important!!
.
Green flags are indicators that the relationship is headed in the right direction and that there is a healthy foundation to continue building trust, respect, and affection as you get to know each other better. Every relationship is unique, but trust, respect, and communication are non-negotiables. Don't rush into a relationship just to have a Valentine this year. Focusing on you until you find what you deserve in a relationship is always worth the wait 💚
.
What other traits and qualities do you consider green flags in a relationship? Comment below 👇👇👇

Do you ever feel like some people in your life expect you to give too much of yourself in relationships? Too much of your time, your attention, your emotional capacity, your body, your resources? Or maybe you expect too much of yourself and end up giving and giving in relationships even when it’s not reciprocated?
.
If you identify with either side of that spectrum, boundaries are about to become your best friend🙌🏻🙌🏽🙌🏿 Making sacrifices is a part of every relationship, but sometimes if we don’t set boundaries, we may end up giving too much of ourselves to the point where the relationship becomes unbalanced or unhealthy.
.
Boundaries are all about #communication and #selfrespect , both of which take practice and intentionality. Take some time today to be honest with yourself about the relationships in your life. Speaking up for yourself and communicating what you need and expect in a relationship isn’t easy, but in the long run, it’s always worth it.
.
Let’s have a conversation in the comments! Do you find it difficult to set boundaries sometimes? Drop your best boundary advice or share an experience👇🏿👇🏽👇🏻

"Even though this is awkward to talk about, I love the program because it makes me think deeply about my relationship. I also talked to my boyfriend about boundaries. And we came in the middle and we are always striving to be stronger in all different ways."
.
We agree... talking about sex and relationships can definitely be awkward sometimes, but it's so so important. We love getting feedback from our students!! And we love it when our students are able to apply what they're learning with Best Choice to their relationships and friendships outside of the classroom.

What's something you've learned from Best Choice?
