"While last Saturday’s Open House truly captured all of the things that bring this campus to life, I found myself especially struck by what unfolded later that afternoon around the football game. Our pep band made its first appearance, our cheerleaders—now headed to the state championships—were on the sidelines, and at halftime our football team paused to honor cancer survivors and remember those we have lost to the disease.

I loved seeing so many parts of the school come together in the same place, each contributing something distinct to the experience of the afternoon. It was joyful, spirited, and at moments deeply moving. There’s another game tomorrow at 1:00! I’ll be there in my new jersey, a gift from the team!"

🌿Field Notes🌿 from Chelle

"This week, fourth graders were exploring partial products. When I walked in, they were using an area model to break a multiplication problem into place-value pieces, finding the product of each smaller part and then adding those pieces back together. The visual representation made it possible to see what was actually happening inside a problem like 310x28, rather than simply memorizing a set of steps.

Once students practiced with a few different problems, the teacher said, 'Wait until you see this! Let’s try the ‘tic-tac-toe’ method!' and she arranged the same problem using the traditional vertical method. Immediately, students could see that the partial products they had found in the area model were the very same numbers appearing in this new format.

The two methods were arranged differently, but the mathematics underneath them was exactly the same. The area model made the place-value reasoning visible, showing how a larger multiplication problem can be decomposed into partial products and then recombined. When students explored the standard algorithm, they could see that they were not learning a new trick or simply moving numbers around but were expressing the same mathematical relationships in a more compact form. Seeing both representations helped make the 'why' underneath the procedure clear.

It was so much fun to see the lightbulbs appear over their heads in real time!"

Many thanks to alum Michael Sedwick '08 for visiting our school community this week! After a gap year post-MICDS, he studied abroad and in the US, and has lived in Shanghai, Berlin, Singapore, Taipei, and Beijing. As an entrepreneur and founder of a boutique college counseling firm, he has spent his life immersed in language and culture.

Sedwick spent time with our 9th- and 12th-grade Mandarin Chinese classes, sharing his fascinating life path so far and answering students' questions. Thank you, Mr. Sedwick, for inspiring our students to think globally!

🌿Field Notes🌿 from Chelle

"I stopped into a third-grade classroom just as students were getting ready for their weekly morphology quiz. When I asked what morphology was, there was no hesitation. They told me that morphemes are the smallest parts of words that have a meaning, like prefixes, roots, and suffixes that can be put together in different ways. Or, as one student put it much more efficiently, 'They’re word LEGOs.'

The walls of the classroom made that idea visible, capturing the 'LEGOs' and their meanings. 'Re-' means again or back, 'bio' means life, 'geo' means earth, and '-ology' means the study of something. Students deciphered the individual building blocks so that they can use them to unlock words they may never have seen before. Knowing that 'bio' means life, for example, gives them a foothold in everything from biology to biography to biodegradable.

It is so powerful to give young readers a tool like this. Instead of treating every unfamiliar word as something entirely new to memorize, they take it apart, look for what they recognize, and reason their way toward meaning. Word LEGOs!"

📅 Friday & Saturday, October 9 & 10, 7:30 p.m. | Sunday, October 11, 2 p.m.

"The Revolutionists" is a comedy about four very real women who lived during the French Revolution’s Reign of Terror: a playwright, an assassin, the former queen, and a rebel from Haiti. The play is about violence and legacy, art and activism, feminism and terrorism, compatriots and chosen sisters, and ultimately, how we go about changing the world.

All Upper School students stepped out of the traditional classroom for their annual Community Day to build connections, serve the St. Louis community, and explore leadership.

From 9th and 12th grade bonding sessions and a 10th-grade leadership workshop with Head of School Chelle Wabrek, to 11th graders exploring the history of St. Louis and seniors volunteering across the local community, students enjoyed a variety of opportunities and leaned into connecting with each other.

On September 25, more than 145 guests gathered in Brauer Hall for the MICDS Athletic Hall of Fame Induction ceremony to honor 37 individual inductees and 19 State Championship teams, with Steve Hughes '84 serving as the Master of Ceremonies.
