Community School has long set the standard for excellence among area elementary schools. For the first time in 2012-2013, Community School will offer a ½-day option for 3-year-olds in the Nursery program. Full-day students will enjoy activity-packed afternoons, including special theme-based programming while paired with the 4-year-old Junior Kindergarten children. Once upon a time… there were books to discover, stories to share, and three days of reading to celebrate! 📚✨ Community’s 74th annual Book Show continues tomorrow (Oct. 7) with a final shopping session from 7:15–10 a.m. There’s still time to find a good book (or two or three!). 🎉

Here are a few highlights from our first two assemblies of the school year! Community’s assemblies give students opportunities to share what they’re learning, see their peers (and teachers!) in the spotlight, and build confidence with public speaking and performance from an early age.

🎭 Modeling Assembly: Staff and sixth graders acted out social scenarios and invited students to help brainstorm solutions before rerunning the scenes. Students also learned how to safely interact with Skipper, our school dog.

🎲 Sharing Assembly: We brought back an old Community tradition this week, giving classes a chance to share a game or concept they’ve been working on.

The 6th Grade Camping Trip is one of our favorite traditions! This year, students enjoyed a range of activities, including nature walks, stream studies, kayaking, and art projects. They practiced skills like setting up a tent and building a fire, while also having time to explore, reflect, and connect in this beautiful setting. Here are a few highlights! 🏕️

Our first graders are having fun working on their “person” projects in woodshop! They began by drawing themselves on paper and are using coping saws, files, and sandpaper to shape each piece. Later in the semester, they’ll work with their teachers to drill holes so they can attach the head and body and use markers to bring their creations to life. 🪚

We also love it when old friends stop by! Rob Knight, who retired in 2023 after 26 years as a Community School woodshop teacher, and his wife, Julie Bugnitz, have been filling in while our woodshop teachers are away on the 6th grade camping trip. We’re always happy to have them back! 🎉

It was a joy to welcome author and illustrator Vera Brosgol to Community School this week! 📚

Vera’s first graphic novel, “Anya’s Ghost,” was published in 2011 and won an Eisner Award. Her first picture book, “Leave Me Alone!” was a 2017 Caldecott Honor Book. Vera spent time with lower division students reading aloud picture books including “Memory Jars” and “A Spoonful of Frogs,” sharing her gift for illustrating as students created their own group memory jar, and even leading frog-catching activities. With upper division, she shared excerpts from her graphic novel, “Be Prepared,” in addition to creating a new cartoon panel featuring a Community student!

Vera encouraged students to keep their sketchbooks handy, so they are ready to draw anything they see and want to remember. Thank you, Vera, for an inspiring and fun-filled visit! 🎉

Games Day was a blast! Last Friday, our 3rd and 4th graders came together for this cherished Community tradition. 4th graders stepped up as team captains, leading their teams and sharing their favorite Upper Division P.E. games with their younger peers.

From learning and leading to playing hard and cheering each other on, the day was all about teamwork, good sportsmanship, and having fun. Our students showed that being a positive teammate matters more than the final score. 🎉

Exploration is at the heart of learning in the early years. 💙💚

Our Nursery, JK, and SK students learn by doing through multisensory, hands-on experiences in whole groups, small groups, and learning centers. Along the way, they develop emerging literacy and math skills, explore the natural world, and grow in independence and responsibility. They also have fun alongside friends, teachers, and, beginning in JK, their older buddies.

It’s a joyful balance of work, play, curiosity, and connection. ✨

What’s in the bag? 🎒

For our 5th graders, everyday objects became a way to explore culture and share about their lives.

As part of a community-building activity, students brought in artifacts representing their family, interests and hobbies, the area they live in, favorite foods, home language, beliefs, and family traditions. Each student then examined one classmate’s collection of objects, taking notes and guessing what each artifact meant.

Students shared their family artifacts in a whole-group circle, then described their other objects in smaller groups with friends and teachers.

The goal? To better understand their own cultures, learn more about one another, and build a stronger classroom community. ✨

We enjoyed reconnecting and kicking off the new school year at our Goldy Day Family Picnic on Saturday! Thank you to everyone who joined us and to all the amazing parent, alumni, and student volunteers who helped organize, set up, and make the event such a joyful celebration of our community! 🎉
