Learn from my mistakes…

If you want to train hard and reap the benefits, you need to take care of your rest and recovery away from training

Fun fact — if you don’t use speed, you lose it!

Who knew?

Tag someone who isn’t training speed often enough!

This is the level of trust I aspire to have with every athlete I work with

Kid usually rips the last rep no matter what

He’s got districts this week and had the forethought to ask me my thoughts on ripping the last rep

Everything is a business decision

Here is our exchange.

This week’s senior spotlight goes on Jackson Johannes! 💥

Jackson came to me from Prairie High School where he runs track.
After graduation, he will be attending UNI where he’s continuing his track career. 💪

It is hard to believe this is my last year with a Johannes in the building! He has been training since he was a sophomore and from what I can tell, he lives and breathes track and field. While putting in 2-3x a week of training in the weight room this year, he also took the extra leap and put in a lot of work on the track with .

I’m looking forward to seeing all his hard work pay off this spring! 💨🏁

Follow These 5 Tips To Get Faster --

1. Cut Out The Junk Volume

We’ve all gone through the relentless gassers and 110yd sprints.

We’ve suffered through the 10min jogs.

This is smashing your legs and killing your speed.

2. Get Stronger

Strength helps us produce more force.

The more force we can produce relative to our body weight moves us through space better.

This contributes to better speeds.

There are limits to this as there is a such thing as being too strong… nevertheless most could benefit from building force outputs

3. Train Speed Regularly

Once a month isn’t enough.

Once every couple of weeks isn’t enough.

Even once a week isn’t enough.

We need to be sprinting 2 to 3 times per week

This is non negotiable in speed development

4. Sprint Appropriate Distances

These 10-20yd sprints aren’t cutting it.

We need to be going AT LEAST 30yd if not 40-60yd to hit high enough speeds to be worthwhile.

Think 90-95% of your max speed…

THAT’S what you need

5. Take Proper Rest In Between

The golden rule is 1min per 10yd sprinted

This allows you to be more fresh for subsequent sprint reps

You’ll hold onto your technique for more reps, deteriorate slower, and have the highest quality throughout your sessions

Jackson Johannes () is the epitome of hard work and stacking 1% gains

He has taken his body through hell and back over & over again knowing he had a chance to go out and earn an opportunity

I have no doubt he will continue to pour his heart and soul into everything he does at UNI & in life

If you take nothing else away from this post —

Decide what you want to do in life

Be like Jackson and work tirelessly day in and day out

Some days you’ll be on top of the world, other days the world might feel like it’s crashing down on you

No matter the ups and downs… whether you win or lose… stay the course

All that time and dedication is going to give you the best opportunity to achieve your goals

The best part… whether you eventually reach your goal or not, every single moment is worthwhile and teaches you lessons about yourself and about life you could have never learned otherwise.

There are 3 ways to classify what is happening during a sprint.

You’re either accelerating, maintaining top speed, or decelerating.

Accelerating = any time you’re gaining speed

Top Speed = acceleration has plateau’d and you maintain a high % of your max velocity

Deceleration = simply put, you’re losing speed

When it comes to sprinting a 40yd dash, it should be your goal to gain speed the whole way, meaning each segment is faster than the one before it.

If you can’t achieve this, you need to work on a couple of things:

1) raise your max speed

2) work on your endurance qualities

If you can do these 2 things, you’ll trim tenths off your 40.

Don’t neglect max velocity.
Don’t neglect acceleration.
Do both. 🤝
