Wilderkids Urban Forest School offers once/week or more classes for children to get out of the house and enjoy some serious nature engagement in the city. Mixed-ages classes take place in Tower Grove Park, Forest Park and the surrounding neighborhood. Children are trusted to take risks and challenge themselves in new ways while also getting acquainted with a diversity of plants, wildlife and community members in the urban locale. Angela, the director, has received training through Tinkergarten play-based outdoor education and Archimedes Earth Education in England. She has worked at Montessori Preschools and lead family nature adventures with Green Spiral Tours. There is so much to discover outside - even more so when children are given the freedom to help lead the way! There are scholarships and work-trades for any family needing financial assistance to attend. In summer, Wildercamp is the 4-day/week summer camp offered in parks around town.

LOOK OUT! It’s caterpillar season! The Hungry Caterpillar is not just a book. Here’s a reason to get your little (or big one) outside. Check your garden beds, bushes, weeds, even tree branches … keep your eyes out! It’s clear you won’t see a thing if you stay inside ;)
These Black swallowtail caterpillars will probably be cocooning soon. Their relatives might be on your walk, in your yard or at your school. Finding one and seeing it LIVE is an amazing occasion.

That’s a wrap!!!
The Wildercamp ‘26 summer season has come to an end. We are grateful to the parks (administration, groundskeepers, rangers and landscapers) to the parents, to our special guests, to all our leaders and counselors and especially to our CAMPERS who propel us to enjoy summer more fully by their childlike wonder, creativity, bravery in new situations and enthusiasm for playing outside! (We never could have endured the heat without their lack of complaining or them distracting us from the fact!

☑️ kids were kids
☑️time was of no importance
☑️screens were forgotten
☑️memories were made
☑️nature inspired

To continue the spirit of Wildercamp at home:

- interfere less in children’s play
- worry less about dirt, bugs, weather or minor injuries

This week’s Wildercamp got a visit from Wild Bird Rehab in Overland, who let us release some Robins and some Mockingbirds at the park! The Robins, amidst screams of delight, flew away so fast we barely saw them. Then we decided to be calm and silent for the release of the Mockingbirds,l and one landed on the edge of the basket before departing!
It pays to be quiet in the presence of wild animals!!
We learned that the rehab center takes birds fly into windows, get injured by cars or whose babies’ nests fall down in a storm.
