🚩JOIN THE CONVERSATION TODAY AT 2:00 PM, CST! Earlier this summer we discussed heat illness prevention programs and field controls, this month’s conversation takes a different approach. We’ll be exploring the physiological effects of working in the heat and what we’re learning about electrolyte and sodium balance, body fueling, medications like GLP-1s, skin issues, fatigue, recovery, and how heat can affect concentration, decision-making, and overall worker performance.

Several recent member experiences have challenged some of the traditional “drink more water” thinking, and I think this will be a great opportunity to share lessons learned and discuss where our industry’s understanding continues to evolve.

Come prepared to share your experiences, lessons learned, or questions. Your participation is what makes these roundtables so valuable. Follow the link to learn more https://ow.ly/PjAn50ZyG2Z.

Working hard in the heat means losing more than water. As we sweat, we also lose electrolytes that help our bodies function properly.

A few simple reminders:

💧Start early. Don’t wait until you’re thirsty to begin hydrating.
💧Drink regularly throughout the day rather than trying to catch up all at once.
💧Remember electrolytes, especially during long periods of heavy work and sweating.
💧Eat and fuel your body. Hydration and nutrition work together.
💧Watch each other. Confusion, unusual behavior, weakness, cramping, nausea, or other changes can be signs that something isn’t right.

More water isn’t always the entire answer. Good heat prevention means helping workers maintain the right balance of hydration, electrolytes, nutrition, rest, and recovery.

The American Society of Concrete Contractors (ASCC) is proud to announce the
formation of its new Technical Services Department, a major strategic initiative designed to strengthen technical support, expand industry leadership, and better serve the increasingly diverse and evolving needs of concrete contractors nationwide.

Leading the new department as Director of Technical Services is Chris Sullivan, a nationally recognized concrete expert with more than 30 years of experience in concrete construction, decorative concrete, polished concrete, coatings, curing technologies, troubleshooting, and technical problem-solving. Sullivan brings extensive field knowledge, industry credibility, and a long history of technical education and leadership to the role. In addition to leading Technical Services, Sullivan will continue overseeing ASCC’s Decorative Concrete Council (DCC) and Concrete Polishing Council (CPC) programs. Joining Sullivan as Technical Advisors is an elite team of respected industry professionals:

✅Tarek Kahn, formerly of Master Builders Solutions
✅Tyler Ley, Ph.D., P.E., Professor at Oklahoma State University
✅Bryan Birdwell of SSI (ASCC Member)
✅Chris Tull of CRT Consulting (ASCC Member)

In addition, Jim Klinger will continue in his important role as operator of the ASCC Concrete Construction Hotline, ensuring members maintain access to trusted, practical field guidance. The creation of the Technical Services Department reflects ASCC’s recognition that today’s concrete contractor faces a rapidly changing environment, from evolving cement technologies and sustainability demands to labor shortages, risk management challenges, performance specifications, and increasingly complex project expectations.
