Before you walk into any meeting where you want to be given an equal voice, ask yourself this first:
โ€œDo I look like I belong? Am I dressed at least equally as formally (if not more than) the others at the table?โ€
S W I P E โžก๏ธ for a quick tutorial on WHY this is important! If you found this helpful please share! ๐Ÿ˜˜

Seriously, I use this one phrase daily! It can be applied to any conversation where youโ€™re looking to collaborate, build rapport, get information, or resolve a problem. Let me know if it helps you!

I use this tip everyday - itโ€™s applicable to ANY interaction you have and works very time!

Thereโ€™s a lot of heavy dialogue right now about our kiddos going back to school. And I know NO ONE knows how much anxiety BTS can cause, like a does, right?

So can I just be one of the first to tell you that youโ€™re doing a great job? Because you absolutely are. And perhaps even more importantly, let me sayโ€ฆ

Donโ€™t you dare let anyone else tell you differently.

No one outside of your family knows your situation and your child as well as you do, so they donโ€™t get one drop of input in your decision and they sure as hell donโ€™t get a bit of space in your head to fill with anxiety and shouldaโ€™ couldaโ€™ wouldas.

โœ… Did you decide to send them back to school? Great! You made the right choice, Mama!

โœ… Did you pick your schoolโ€™s full-time e-learning option? Awesome! You made the right choice, Mama!

โœ… Did you choose to ๐Ÿ’ฏ homeschool this year? Sweet! You made the right choice, Mama!

You ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿป made ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿป the ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿป right ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿป choice. ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿป

And so did she. And her, too - even if you all chose differently, itโ€™s all the right choice.

I wrote out some thoughts on how to make this moment a real turning point to bring about real changeโ€“โ€“and pulled together some resources to help young activists sustain the momentum by channeling their energy into concrete action.

Fighting for racial equality is 1. Just the right freaking thing to do
and 2. A natural piece of what I do in the Special Education community. Minority children are disproportionately negatively impacted by ALL aspects of our educational system, including their access to special education they might need.
And 3.
Itโ€™s ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿป just ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿป the ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿป right ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿป freaking ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿป thing ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿป to ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿป do ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿป

If you want to learn more, start reading. Start googling. Follow BIPOC. Listen. Listen. When you have questions GOOGLE IT FIRST, then ask a white ally. Right now, DO NOT ask a black person who has zero capacity. Just donโ€™t.

Iโ€™m so thankful the Universe brought this guy into my life while I was so young. Weโ€™ve had 18 years together and with a lot of hard work, deliberate effort, and a dash of miraculous luck, Iโ€™m happier with him today than I could have ever thought possible. Heโ€™s a true teammate and my biggest champion, while also constantly challenging me to be the best version of myself.

He makes my heart squeezy and gives me all the ๐Ÿ˜, even when heโ€™s making me crazy.

Thanks for doing life with me babe.

I never understood why he considers the creek across the street โ€œhisโ€ to take care of, until this past weekend.

He cares for the community common spaces the same way I care about other peopleโ€™s kiddos. Doesnโ€™t matter that neither technically belong to us...weโ€™re just each using the gifts, talents, and interests we have to improve the world around us. โค๏ธ

If youโ€™re a worrier like me, try to remember: itโ€™s okay to feel how you feel. You donโ€™t have to dwell on feelings (they arenโ€™t facts!), but you donโ€™t have to judge yourself harshly for having them either. Itโ€™s okay. ๐Ÿ’›

I pick my battles, people. ๐Ÿ™„๐Ÿ™„

These boys think itโ€™s hysterical to have all-day evidence of them โ€œsleeping like a tornado.โ€ They demand pictures. They compete with each other and themselves to see if they can get it any crazier.

And to all the teachers and other people who see them - I do always suggest that we dunk their heads in water and comb the ratโ€™s nest. I really do! But theyโ€™re happy and I just donโ€™t care enough to upset the fragile balance we have in the mornings. ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™€๏ธ๐Ÿคช it miiiiiight be time for buzz cuts though. @ St. Louis, Missouri
