There’s just something special about snail mail. 💌✨

Maybe I’m old school, but does anyone else still send a letter to their new kiddos before school starts? Or is it just me? 😂

In a world where everything is becoming more and more digital, I think there’s still a little magic in opening the mailbox and finding something with your name on it. A simple letter can build excitement, calm first-day jitters, and help little ones feel seen before they ever walk through the classroom door. ❤️

I know email is faster…but I just can’t convince myself to give up this tradition.

Tell me I’m not the only one! Do you still send snail mail to your students? 📬🍎

🕗 TEACHERS ARE EXPECTED TO WORK FOR FREE BEFORE THE SCHOOL YEAR EVEN STARTS.

Furniture moved.

Bulletin boards finished.

Supplies organized, most of them paid for out of your own pocket.

Lesson plans written weeks ahead so the first month does not swallow you alive.

All of it has to be done before students walk through the door.

Most of it happens before the contract year officially begins.

It is not on the calendar.

It is not included in the paycheck.

But every parent who walks into open house expects the classroom to look finished, welcoming, and ready.

Every administrator expects the same thing.

The expectation is mandatory.

The pay for meeting it is zero.

Now imagine literally any other profession trying this.

A restaurant telling employees to come in unpaid and prepare the entire dining room before opening night.

A hospital expecting nurses to organize the unit on their own time before patients arrive.

That would be called wage theft before lunch.

In education, they call it August.

And somehow, the people doing all this unpaid work are told they are simply dedicated.

The dedication is real.

But calling it dedication makes it easier to ignore what is actually happening.

Teachers are using their own money and donating weeks of labor because school budgets do not cover what everyone still expects them to provide.

That is not a personality trait.

That is an unpaid bill being handed directly to teachers.

Whether you’re off work today or not, take a moment to reflect on the importance of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s life and work.

When Dr. King said, “somewhere I read…,” he was reminding the nation that justice was already written into our laws and ideals—it was promised, yet repeatedly denied.

He called out the hypocrisy of a democracy that spoke of equality while failing to deliver it to everyone.

Today, that message matters more than ever. We must stand up, speak out against injustice, and demand dignity for all.
