The College School PreK-8, Experiential Education. Founded in 1963, The College School is thriving and leading Independent School in the St. Louis area.

We believe in an experiential education, where children are connected to authentic lessons. Children learn to become leaders, collaborators, stewards, risk-takers, and critical thinkers. With a focus on academic excellence, we also believe that some of the most valuable lessons can be found in an arduous, yet safe, outdoor adventure education curriculum.

In our Reggio Emilia curriculum, children learn by exploring ideas, making choices, and expressing what they understand in many ways. Quilting brings that learning to life: in the Atelier, Newport students experiment with color, texture, pattern, and materials, then work together to turn their ideas into something tangible. The process builds creativity, problem-solving, confidence, and a sense of shared accomplishment.

Small snails, big lessons! 🐌

Newport’s classroom snails, hatched from eggs last year, are helping our youngest learners explore science while practicing patience and empathy. As students gently hold them, they learn about their shells, eye stalks, tentacles, and muscular foot.

Waiting for a snail to peek out takes calm hands and patience. Students learn to give another living creature the time and space it needs to feel safe. And when those tiny eye stalks finally emerge, the smiles say it all!

Through caring for their snails, Newport students are discovering more about the natural world and themselves.

Fifth Grade is creating small Monarch Waystations with native milkweed and nectar-rich flowers to support monarch butterflies throughout their seasonal cycles.

This project builds on TCS’s long-standing Monarch Curriculum. Through raising monarchs, tagging wild butterflies, analyzing data, and participating in the international Monarch Watch program, students connect hands-on science with caring for the natural world.

A little pine cone, a big surprise! 🌲🔍

At LaBarque, Second Grade students collected pine cones, studied the patterns of their scales, and sketched their observations in journals. What would happen if they put them in water? Many predicted they would simply float!

Back in the classroom during Wonder Lab, students tested their predictions and were amazed to watch the scales close. Through drawings, written observations, reading, and discussion, they discovered how this adaptation protects the seeds inside during wet weather.

From noticing patterns outdoors to investigating questions together, students are building the observation, collaboration, and flexible thinking skills at the heart of Second Grade’s year of wonder.

There’s so much learning, growing, and playing happening in Kindergarten!

From teaming up with their Fifth Grade Buddies to study caterpillars up close with digital microscopes, to building number sense with hands-on manipulatives, to deepening friendships and being silly on the playground, these Kindergarten days are full.

A recent favorite activity for our 5- and 6-year-olds was exploring The Tortoise and the Hare. After listening to the story, students worked together to recall and sequence what happened. Then, with a buddy, they retold the story in their own way, using the light table, dramatic play, nature building, loose parts, and more.

All in a day’s work (and play!) in Kindergarten.

Our sixth graders headed to Don Robinson State Park to practice orienteering as part of their Wilderness theme. Learning to navigate outdoors challenges students to observe carefully, interpret maps, think through choices, and adjust when a route doesn’t go as planned.

Each decision is an opportunity to build problem-solving skills, practice teamwork, and grow more confident in their own judgment. These experiences help prepare students for their wilderness adventures while building persistence and independence that they can carry into everyday life. Missouri State Parks

From having a buddy to being the big buddy!

Third Grade and Big Bend students met with their buddies this week, marking an exciting milestone for our third graders: their first year with a younger buddy of their own!

Now it’s their turn to offer a helping hand, make someone feel welcome, and discover what it means to be a role model.

Buddy relationships connect students across ages, giving younger students someone to look up to and older students opportunities to practice empathy, patience, and leadership. Through time together, familiar faces become friendships, helping build a school community where every student feels known and included.

Here’s to a year of learning, laughter, and growing together!
