This five day class will address the process of painting a portrait to develop a compelling image, spanning the fundamentals of drawing, to character development, and image strength.

In moving back-and-forth between optical and conceptual approaches, participants can choose to continue working with a close fidelity to nature, or they can introduce more source material and push their portraits in narrative or emotive directions. Anne will offer guidance through demonstrations, critiques, and conversations.

Beginner to advanced, painters welcome, some previous experience in oil painting is recommended. For more information see www.gacastudio.org/workshops

Contemporary artist and some Kiefer revolutionized modern painting with his deeply tactile, heavily textured surfaces. Victor Wang invites you to join him in the specialized study. He will share his personal insights and experiences with Kiefer’s methods. We will experiment with dynamic Mark making, raw materials, texture building, and glazing layers to recreate the iconic surface quality.

The class meets Tuesdays and Fridays 9:00-12:00 and begins July 10th.

Anne Herrero workshop, July 13-17. “Painting the Portrait in a Landscape”

Anne apprenticed with Norwegian, contemporary figurative painter, Odd, Nerdrum, in Norway. She then earned her MFA from the New York Academy of Art in 2020. And Herrero now lives in Missouri. She says,“ my roots here are deep, and I have found the landscape of my heart. The nomadic tendency in me has abated, the stillness now allowing for the growth I once found only in movement. The natural world – it cycles, its patterns, its fields and gnarled trees – is the wellspring for my current body of work.

The process of drawing is about developing the ideas of form and space. This language of foreman space was developed through centuries by the practices of artists, who built on that knowledge. Eventually, the knowledge gained by this practice, flows out of the artist without thought. The skill and habit of observing relationships is then carried over when one puts down the pencil and begins to paint.
