This week our JK and 3rd grade students went on a joint field trip! Each year the 3rd grade students serve as older buddies to our JK students. This week’s field trip was an opportunity for them to enjoy their buddy friendship beyond the classroom while also learning about something new— Dairy Farms!

Our JK students have been talking all about ways God provides for our bodies by giving us nutrients we need to grow big and strong through healthy foods. Our students visited Rolling Lawns Farms in Greenville, IL (Rolling Lawns Farm ) to deepen their understanding of dairy. Our students visited multiple parts of the farm, were able to feed some of the farms’ cows, and learned all about the day to day processes that take place at dairy farms. Our students even got to make their own butter, as well as taste test the butter and a sampling of the farm’s ice cream.

Thank you to our friends at Rolling Lawns Farm for hosting our students!

This week our 6th grade students began their weather and water unit in Science, specifically learning about air masses and weather patterns. In the lab students modeled convection currents using water, red food coloring, and heat to be able to see the convection currents as they happened.

This morning in Chapel we heard from one of our 4th grade teachers, Mrs. Marty, as part of our “Journeys With Jesus” series. Mrs. Marty talked about how she came to faith in Christ, and how her adoption story played a part in her understanding that she has a heavenly Father who loves her deeply. She shared with our students what she called her life verse, which says:

“In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.” - Matthew 5:16

Mrs. Marty encouraged all of our students to live in a way so that others will see God in them and through them. Thank you, Mrs. Marty, for sharing with our students today!

At last Friday’s Garden Club meeting, we had 30 students join us to harvest all the sweet potatoes and enjoy eating the remaining cantaloupes and watermelon.  It was a great day to be outside playing and working!  In addition to gardening, we admired the beauty of a monarch’s chrysalis from our butterfly garden.  If you’re interested in attending Garden Club, mark your calendar for the next meeting which will be after dismissal on Friday, October 30.

On Friday we welcomed Mr. Jamal Liddawi to Chapel. Mr. Liddawi is an Iraqi pastor who was visiting the states to attend a conference at Central Presbyterian Church. He shared with us about the growing population of Christians and Christian churches in Iraq, and asked our students to pray for the children of Iraq and that they may come to know Christ.

In art, our second grader students are learning all about the work of Japanese iconoclast, Yayoi Kusama. Inspired by her pumpkin sculptures, students learned how to create their own sculptures using everyday recyclable materials, plaster paper mache techniques, and painted patterns using sponge stencils. We love how these colorful, patterned sculptures turned out!

In JK our students are learning all about nutrition, and the things God has provided to build our bodies to be healthy and strong. This week one of our nurses, Nurse Thiessen, visited to talk with our students about nutrition. Our students then taste tested strawberries, blueberries, and oranges and gathered data about their favorite fruits. Then, using that information, they learned how to create pie charts to represent their findings! Great job, JK students!
