Check out my new podcast where I’m sharing a ton about my experience as a massage therapist, a CE provider, and what I know about trauma informed care.

Just because you use your feet… and just because “ashiatsu” literally translates to foot pressure… does not mean the work you’re doing is “Ashiatsu.” ⁣👣
⁣
For years, The Center for Barefoot Massage has been working to normalize Barefoot Massage as the umbrella term that honors the wide range of global traditions that use the feet as therapeutic tools. That includes Japanese barefoot shiatsu, Indian Chavutti Thirumal, Hawaiian lomi, Thai barefoot lineages, and the modern Western styles that developed here in the U.S.⁣
⁣
𝗕𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗳𝗼𝗼𝘁 𝗠𝗮𝘀𝘀𝗮𝗴𝗲 = any professional massage therapy technique performed with the feet as tools, not hands.
⁣
The word “Ashiatsu” belongs to a very specific cultural context — and the Westernized version many LMTs practice today is not the traditional Japanese form. The 1990s American technique was deep-tissue/Swedish-based and used overhead bars, oil, gliding, and tables. Traditional Japanese ashiatsu does none of that.⁣
⁣
𝗜𝗳 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗲𝗱 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝘂𝘀, 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗻𝗲𝗱 𝗠𝘆𝗼𝗳𝗮𝘀𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗔𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗮𝘁𝘀𝘂 𝗕𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗳𝗼𝗼𝘁 𝗠𝗮𝘀𝘀𝗮𝗴𝗲 (𝗙𝗮𝘀𝗰𝗶𝗔𝘀𝗵𝗶) — a modern, evidence-informed lineage rooted in fascia research, biomechanics, pain science, and interoception. That’s not “Ashiatsu”… and it’s important to call it what it is.⁣

So when you’re naming services, educating clients, or using hashtags, remember:
Not every Barefoot Massage is “Ashiatsu.”
And if you must use the A-word to specify a style, use a full qualifier like:
👉 𝘔𝘺𝘰𝘧𝘢𝘴𝘤𝘪𝘢𝘭 𝘈𝘴𝘩𝘪𝘢𝘵𝘴𝘶 𝘉𝘢𝘳𝘦𝘧𝘰𝘰𝘵 𝘔𝘢𝘴𝘴𝘢𝘨𝘦
👉 Myofascial Barefoot Massage
👉 Or just Barefoot Massage
⁣
Better language = better clarity = better respect for every lineage that contributed to the global history of Barefoot Massage.
⁣
Let’s keep raising the standard — magazine editors, educators and practitioners included. 👣✨

These are important distinctions.

Your body is your craft and your tool. A painter 🧑‍🎨 sees the brush as an extension of how they create! Your body should be treated as such and therefore you should fill it with love and knowledge. Come learn more with me. How to fill your vessel with care and tending….annnnd some advanced concepts thrown in there too. 🙃

Something I notice students believing without a lot of awareness: They believe they should be tired, depleted, and exhausted after seeing a client. It’s like they haven’t earned their money unless a little piece of them have been taken. Of course, not all of my students believe that but from what I’ve seen, this is the most dangerous to unconsciously believe. Talk about a path to burn out but I get it, these are the ingrained and unrealized pieces of culture that live in us without knowing unless we bring awareness to it.

Learning to use your feet saves your body-YES! Learning to use your feet also unravels what you’re used to thinking about giving and receiving therapeutic care.

What if you didn’t have to over extend to be helpful and productive? What if your client appreciated you more because you didn’t carry an underlying-even-if-unconscious resentment about the effort you put on yourself to feel valid?

What if your work felt effortless and effective all at once? Join me in St. Louis, December 8–9, for FasciAshi Advanced — a deeper way to give, without losing your footing.
