The University of Wyoming Family Medicine Residency Programs proudly celebrated our 50th Anniversary at the Wyoming Medical Society’s Primary Care Symposium Gala! This special evening honored the legacy of family medicine and the incredible people who have dedicated their careers to caring for others.

A highlight of the evening was recognizing Kathi Zubrod, who has devoted an extraordinary 48 years of service to the University of Wyoming Family Medicine Residency Program in Cheyenne! Her dedication, commitment, and lasting impact on generations of residents and the program are truly remarkable.

In honor of Kathi’s incredible legacy, the Excellence in Service Award will continue in her name moving forward, ensuring that her dedication to service is celebrated for years to come.

Congratulations to our Former resident Farrukh Merchant MD. Well deserved!!!

A MESSAGE FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR: Farrukh Merchant, MD

I am pleased to announce that Farrukh Merchant, MD, has been selected for the permanent position of Senior Medical Advisor for the Office of Primary Care. In this role, Dr. Merchant will serve as a technical expert and strategic medical advisor, reporting directly to me. He will provide expert clinical and operational guidance on all aspects of primary care delivery across VHA, ensuring alignment with national goals, strategic initiatives, policy requirements, and evidence‑based practice.
Dr. Merchant is a board-certified primary care physician and Fellow of the American Academy of Family Physicians with more than 20 years of service to the Veterans Health Administration. He is a graduate of the VA Leadership Development Institute and a recognized VA Geriatric Scholar. He has dedicated his career to advancing team-based and virtual primary care for vulnerable Veteran populations, beginning with 14 years of direct patient care before progressing through increasingly senior leadership roles.
Since 2019, he has served as Chief of Tele-Primary Care for VA Network 22's Clinical Resource Hub (CRH). Under his leadership, the CRH tele-primary care program has become one of the nation's leading virtual care services, pioneering a fully virtual care model and a network-wide same-day call-out program, and earning national recognition for its innovation in addressing primary care staffing shortages.
Dr. Merchant has also completed two details to the Office of Primary Care (OPC) under my direction as Senior Medical Advisor, supporting clinical operations and leading national workgroups. He is a steadfast advocate for primary care clinician workload efficiency and for reducing unnecessary administrative burden on providers. As a member of the OPC Consultative Team, Dr. Merchant has conducted consultative visits to sites nationwide, with recommendations that have contributed to shorter wait times for new patients. He has also represented OPC in several key specialty workgroups.

Dr. Merchant is a Southern Californian who joined the VA immediately after residency and counts many Veterans among best friends.

Celebrating Dr. Vincent “Skip” Ross — 2026 Cheyenne Frontier Days™ Hall of Fame Inductee! 🏆

The University of Wyoming Family Medicine Residency Program at Cheyenne is incredibly proud to celebrate Dr. Vincent “Skip” Ross on his well-deserved induction into the Cheyenne Frontier Days™ Hall of Fame!

Since 1986, Dr. Ross has dedicated himself to caring for the athletes who compete at one of the world’s most demanding rodeo events. Serving as Arena Physician and, since 2018, Medical Director, his calm leadership, expertise, compassion, and commitment to safety have made an immeasurable impact on generations of contestants.

From responding to critical injuries in the arena to developing proactive medical and safety protocols, Dr. Ross exemplifies the very best of Family Medicine — skill, service, leadership, and a deep commitment to the community.

We are honored to call Dr. Ross one of our own and so proud of the legacy he continues to build through his dedication to medicine, rodeo, and Cheyenne.

What an incredible few days at the AAFP FUTURE Conference! As the conference comes to a close, we’re leaving inspired, energized, and grateful for the opportunity to connect with so many outstanding future family physicians.

It was a privilege to share what makes our residency program special, meet talented medical students from across the country, and have meaningful conversations about the future of Family Medicine. Thank you to everyone who stopped by our booth, asked great questions, and shared your stories and aspirations with us.

A heartfelt thank you to everyone who helped make this event such a success. We can’t wait to see where your journey takes you, and we hope to welcome many of you to Cheyenne in the future!
