Alumni Feature Friday! – Fr. John Mayo ’02

Fr. John Mayo ’02 has dedicated his life to serving others through faith, guidance, and ministry. A 2002 graduate of De Smet Jesuit High School, Fr. Mayo was ordained a priest for the Archdiocese of St. Louis in 2009 and has served in several parishes throughout the archdiocese before joining Kenrick-Glennon Seminary.

In addition to his work at the seminary, Fr. Mayo serves alongside the Catholic Renewal Center of St. Louis and has spent many years offering spiritual guidance through the St. Louis Review's "Dear Father" column. His commitment to spiritual direction and healing ministry continues to impact countless lives across the St. Louis community.

Thank you, Fr. Mayo, for faithfully living out the Jesuit mission and for the many ways you continue to serve the Church and others. We are proud to call you a Spartan and a true Man for Others!

Alumni Feature Friday! – Lucas Nikolaisen '13

Lucas Nikolaisen '13 embodies what it means to be a Man for Others. A 2013 graduate of De Smet Jesuit, Lucas has continued to give back to the school community through years of dedicated service to the De Smet Jesuit Alumni Association.

Lucas served as Vice President of the Alumni Association for two years before stepping into the role of President, where he served for another two years. Through his leadership, commitment, and willingness to serve, Lucas has helped strengthen the connection between De Smet Jesuit and its alumni community.

Lucas is also a CFP Wealth Advisor at Krilogy, where he continues to build relationships and serve others through his professional work. His leadership and generosity with his time are a wonderful example of putting the Jesuit mission into action.

Thank you, Lucas, for your four years of leadership and service to De Smet Jesuit. We are incredibly grateful for the ways you continue to give back and lead as a true Man for Others. You make the De Smet Jesuit community proud!

What an incredible kickoff for the De Smet Jesuit Alumni Association!

Our MAC West Alumni Association Kick-Off Event brought together more than 135 alumni for a great evening of drinks, appetizers, socializing, and networking with fellow Spartans.

A huge thank you to John Goessling ’71 for hosting us at the MAC West and helping make the evening such a success!

Jake Hafner '91, founder of Civil Life Brewing Company, has a passion for community, craftsmanship, and service which has made a lasting impact throughout the St. Louis region.

A 1991 graduate of De Smet Jesuit, Jake has built more than a successful brewery, he has created a welcoming space that brings people together while supporting local organizations and strengthening the community. Through his work and service, he continues to embody the Jesuit mission and inspire those around him.

Congratulations to Matthew Beermann '11 on being named the recipient of the 2026 Faber Young Alumni Award from Rockhurst University! Matthew a 2011 graduate of De Smet Jesuit and 2015 graduate of Rockhurst University exemplifies the value of Jesuit education. This honor recognizes young alumni who exemplify Jesuit ideals through leadership, service, and a lifelong commitment to making a positive impact on others.

Matthew's recognition reflects the values first learned at De Smet Jesuit High School, faith, leadership, integrity, and a dedication to being a Man for Others. Through his commitment to serving his community and living out the Jesuit mission in both his personal and professional life, Matthew continues to inspire those around him while carrying forward the spirit of St. Ignatius.

Whether he's serving up an incredible meal or giving back to the De Smet Jesuit community, Chef D. Scott Phillips '88 truly embodies what it means to be a Man for Others. As the founder of Food Service Consultants, Chef Scott has built a company dedicated to providing exceptional food and hospitality, and De Smet Jesuit is fortunate to benefit from that commitment every day.

Through Food Service Consultants Inc., Chef Scott and his team operate the De Smet cafeteria, serving our students, faculty, and staff with care each day. Beyond that, they cater countless events across campus, with Chef Scott generously donating his time, talent, and resources to support the De Smet community whenever he can.
