Congratulations to Laura Gray, EIT (SLU Civil, 2024) for being recognized as the 2026 Outstanding Practitioner Advisor by the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE)- St. Louis Section.

Since graduating from Saint Louis University, Laura has remained engaged with our ASCE Student Chapter, serving as a mentor, advocate, and resource for our students. Through her guidance on professional development, support of student competitions and symposium, and commitment to connecting students with opportunities in the civil engineering community, she has made an impact on the chapter members.

Laura serves as a Transportation Analyst at CBB Transportation Engineers + Planners. Within her role, she has supported project engineers on various corridor studies, traffic studies, safety studies, and parking studies in addition to leading the CBB summer intern program.

During her time as a student at SLU, she was involved in ASCE, SSE Ambassadors, Tau Beta Pi, Alpha Sigma Nu, and Sazon, SLU’s Salsa Dancing Team.

We are very proud of Laura’s accomplishments and can't wait to see what she does next!

Join us in congratulating Mason Nordike (Class of 2028) on receiving a scholarship from the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) St. Louis Section!

Mason, a third-year student from Southern Illinois, currently serves as President of the ASCE Saint Louis University Student Chapter, and was selected from a competitive pool of applicants to receive this award. The scholarship recognizes civil engineering students in the St. Louis area who excel academically, demonstrate strong leadership, and show a commitment to the profession.

Mason previously served as newsletter editor for the ASCE Saint Louis University Student Chapter, and is also a DJ on KSLU, Saint Louis University's student-run free-form internet radio station.

As a third-year student, Mason has already completed two summer internships. His first was in the Chicago metropolitan area, where he worked on sanitary sewer projects. This past summer, he interned with Olsson in St. Louis, contributing to traffic and transportation engineering projects. He also spent a semester studying abroad at Saint Louis University's Madrid Campus, taking the opportunity to travel throughout Europe.

In addition to his civil engineering studies, Mason is pursuing a minor in entrepreneurship.

We are very proud of Mason's accomplishments and look forward to seeing all he will achieve in the future.

The Department of Civil Engineering is proud to congratulate Dr. Tugce Baser on being awarded the Banpu Research Professorship in Sustainability.

Dr. Baser's work addresses critical challenges at the intersection of geotechnical engineering, climate resilience, and sustainable energy systems. Her research on geothermal technologies, permafrost degradation, freeze-thaw processes, and the thermal behavior of geomaterials is advancing scientific understanding while supporting the development of more sustainable and resilient infrastructure.

This honor reflects Dr. Baser's outstanding contributions to geotechnical and sustainable infrastructure engineering, as well as her commitment to mentoring students and advancing scholarship in the field. We are proud to have her as a member of our faculty and look forward to the continued impact of her work.

Please join us in congratulating Dr. Baser on this well-deserved achievement.

Meet Spencer McFarlane, a third-year civil engineering student and Cubs fan from the Chicago metropolitan area!

This summer, Spencer interned as a Project Management Intern at PREMIER Design + Build Group. During his internship, he supported bid comparisons, scheduling, project portfolio development, and budgeting efforts. He also contributed to the Chicago Metra's South Water Street development at Millennium Station. This opportunity provided valuable hands-on experience with site walks, communication with subcontractors and government agencies, management of unforeseen conditions, and contract review and interpretation.

Through this experience, Spencer gained firsthand insight into how concepts taught in the Construction and Project Management course are applied in real-world construction projects.

Beyond the classroom, Spencer is actively involved in extracurricular activities as a member of the Bare Naked Statues a ca****la group. Alongside several fellow civil engineering students, he performs at events across campus and throughout the university community.

We're proud of Spencer's accomplishments and look forward to seeing what he does next!
