Stark Lab

Stark Lab The lab studies older adults living in the community. The lab has a strong network of community partners and many colleagues in the U.S.

The Participation, Environment and Performance Lab (PEPL) focuses on the contribution the environment can make toward improving performance, participation and quality of life for people with functional limitations. The clinical translational research of the Participation, Environment and Performance Laboratory (PEPL) focuses on the unique contribution that the environment can make toward improving the performance, participation and quality of life for persons living with functional limitations. Dr. Stark and her team study how the environment accounts for the differences between what individuals are capable of doing and their actual participation in society. An exploration of the physical environment as influencing behavior is the basis of research questions designed to explore the impact of the person/environment interface. Members of the lab collaborate with colleagues from a variety of disciplines including Engineering, Pharmacy, Nursing, Physical Therapy and Medicine. and internationally that collaborate on projects. The lab also accepts Fieldwork II students.

While falls are often considered a problem for older adults, evidence shows that falls are also of concern for people aging (ages 45-64) with long-term physical disabilities.

In our cohort study of health and participation of this population, we found that falls, falls in multiple years, and fall-related injuries are common and are also associated with aging-with-disability symptoms, particularly fatigue.

This study underscores the importance of fall prevention for people aging with disability. More research is needed on interventions that address symptoms like fatigue as components of fall prevention programs.

Congratulations to coauthors on the publication on our Delphi study of a dyadic social support intervention for people with TBI!

We built consensus on intervention components among a panel through three iterative surveys. This collaborative, community-engaged approach to intervention development can generate interventions that are both theoretically sound and implementable in the context where they are most needed.

Another publication hot off the presses! We found that TIMM, a tailored medication management intervention for older adults, is feasible, acceptable and may reduce barriers and improve performance of medication management.

Interventions to address polypharmacy and improve adherence are insufficient for community-dwelling older adults. To examine the feasibility, acceptability, and...

Our article on fall research funding relative to the public health burden of falls is now available online in the American Journal of Health Promotion.

We found that research funding on falls is disproportionately low despite the significant impact falls have on health and mortality for older adults. Addressing this gap in fall prevention funding is especially urgent as the aging population grows.
