TEACHER FEATURE: Carlyn Parent

Carlyn teaches all Family and Consumer Sciences (FACS) classes at Lutheran North - Middle School FACS, Food & Nutrition, Advanced Food & Nutrition, Child Development, Fashion Design & Clothing Construction, Advanced Fashion, and FACS Internship. She also serves as Senior Class Advisor, sponsors Black History Council, and helps plan middle school events like the annual Middle School Mixer and Girls Night In.

Fun fact: she didn't start out as a teacher! She majored in Fashion Merchandising, then received her Master of Arts in Teaching Speech & Theatre, finally she added a FACS certification. She took the long road and it paid off.

Outside of school you'll find her traveling the country in her RV with her partner and dogs, or catching a show at The Fabulous Fox with her mom (they have season tickets).

What students say:
"Her class is the one I most look forward to."
"She does everything she can to give us a hands-on and memorable experience."
"I didn't like sewing at my old school, but Ms. Parent helped me actually enjoy the process and like fashion a lot more."
(She insists she isn't always as nice as they say, but the students disagree.)

Her advice, especially to seniors: "Don't wait for things to get comfortable, or you'll be waiting forever. Life will never feel perfectly comfortable or ready for a big change. Sometimes you just have to do it, even if it's uncomfortable."

Wise words from someone who took three different academic paths to find her calling.
