🌎💛 Hispanic Heritage Month begins today!

September 15 kicks off a month-long celebration of the histories, cultures, and contributions of Hispanic and Latino communities. At TLC Family Care, we believe these celebrations can be wonderful opportunities for children and families to learn, ask questions, explore, and celebrate together.

So, where does this month come from, and why does it begin on September 15 instead of October 1?

Here are a few ways to explore it together this week:

📚 Read a book:
Try Dear Primo: A Letter to My Cousin by Duncan Tonatiuh. This beautiful picture book follows two cousins, one living in the United States and one in Mexico, as they share what their everyday lives are like.

📖 Learn the history:
Hispanic Heritage Month began as Hispanic Heritage Week in 1968. In 1988, it was expanded to a full month, September 15 through October 15.

September 15 is especially meaningful because it marks the independence anniversary of five Central American countries: Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua.

🗺️ Try this family activity:
Pull out a map and see if you can find all five countries together. Then talk about what “independence day” means. You can even take the conversation a step further and talk about important moments of independence, freedom, or change in your own family's story.

The goal isn't simply to learn a date or memorize a list of countries. It's about helping children understand that history, culture, family, and community are all connected.

This month, let's make space for curiosity, meaningful conversations, books, traditions, and stories from the many cultures that make our communities richer.

SEPTEMBER IS A BIG MONTH AT TLC FAMILY CARE!

We’re celebrating two important occasions that are especially meaningful to our TLC community.

September 15 kicks off Hispanic Heritage Month, a time to celebrate the histories, cultures, traditions, and contributions of Hispanic and Latino communities. We’re looking forward to learning, sharing, and celebrating throughout the month.

Then on September 20, we kick off International Nanny Recognition Week! This is a week dedicated to recognizing the incredible nannies and caregivers who make a lasting difference in the lives of children and families every single day.

From culture and community to caregiving and connection, September gives us so many reasons to celebrate the people who make our communities stronger.

Playdate or extra babysitting? Sometimes the line isn’t quite as clear as we think.

Your nanny is caring for your children when a friend comes over for a playdate. Is that simply part of the day, or has the childcare responsibility changed because your nanny is now caring for an additional child?

These situations can create confusion for both families and nannies, especially when expectations haven’t been discussed ahead of time.

Transitions can be hard for kids, and that’s completely normal.

Going from playtime to dinner, screen time to homework, the playground to the car, or a busy morning routine to school drop-off can sometimes feel like a much bigger deal to a child than it does to an adult.

One simple way caregivers can help? Give children a little time to prepare for what comes next.

Try:
⏰ A five-minute warning
⏰ A visual timer
⏰ A simple countdown
⏰ Letting a child know what is coming next
⏰ Offering a small choice, such as “Do you want to put your shoes on first or grab your backpack?”

These little strategies can help children feel more prepared and give them a sense of control.

A skilled caregiver understands that managing the transition is just as important as managing the activity itself.
